Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
SUNY Upstate sponsors H-1B roles that meet USCIS specialty occupation criteria, meaning your degree must directly relate to the job duties. For clinical and research positions, verify your foreign credentials have been evaluated by a NACES-recognized service before applying.
Target departments with recurring sponsorship history
Focus your job search on SUNY Upstate's clinical departments, research divisions, and academic faculty tracks, where H-1B sponsorship is most common. Roles in medicine, biomedical sciences, and allied health are more likely to have established sponsorship pathways than administrative positions.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified H-1B filings
Before applying, confirm SUNY Upstate has filed H-1B petitions for your target role type. Migrate Mate surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by employer and occupation, so you can see which job categories have active sponsorship history at this institution.
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your offer
SUNY Upstate must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your salary meets DOL prevailing wage requirements for your occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for your role in Syracuse before negotiating your offer.
Request a written sponsorship commitment before accepting
Academic medical centers vary on whether sponsorship costs come from departmental budgets or central HR. Before signing an offer, confirm in writing that SUNY Upstate will cover I-129 filing fees and whether premium processing is available for your petition.
Prepare for cap-subject timing if you're switching status
If you're moving from F-1 OPT or another nonimmigrant status, SUNY Upstate's H-1B petition must be cap-subject unless the role qualifies for a cap-exempt exemption through the university's research or educational functions. Confirm cap status with HR early so you can plan around the April filing window.
SUNY Upstate Medical University H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does SUNY Upstate Medical University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, SUNY Upstate Medical University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying roles across its clinical, research, and academic departments. As a public academic medical center, it has an established process for H-1B petitions, particularly for physicians, scientists, and specialized healthcare professionals whose positions meet USCIS specialty occupation requirements.
Which roles and departments typically receive H-1B sponsorship at SUNY Upstate Medical University?
H-1B sponsorship at SUNY Upstate is most common in clinical medicine, biomedical research, and academic faculty positions. Physicians, research scientists, nurses with specialized credentials, and allied health professionals in roles requiring a specific bachelor's degree or higher are the most frequently sponsored job categories. Administrative and general support roles are less likely to qualify.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at SUNY Upstate Medical University?
Once you receive a job offer, SUNY Upstate's HR or legal team files the Labor Condition Application with DOL and then submits the I-129 petition to USCIS on your behalf. You don't file independently. Coordinate with your hiring department early to confirm sponsorship approval, since the LCA and petition preparation can take several weeks before the USCIS filing date.
How long does H-1B sponsorship take at SUNY Upstate Medical University?
Standard USCIS processing for an H-1B petition typically runs several months, though SUNY Upstate can request premium processing to receive a decision within a few business days for an additional fee. For cap-subject petitions, the earliest employment start date is October 1 of the fiscal year, so timing your offer acceptance around the April registration window is essential.
How do I find H-1B jobs at SUNY Upstate Medical University?
Search SUNY Upstate's official careers portal for open positions and filter by department or job category. To verify which roles have active H-1B sponsorship history, Migrate Mate shows DOL Labor Condition Application filings by employer and occupation, giving you a clearer picture of where SUNY Upstate has consistently sponsored international candidates before you apply.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at SUNY Upstate Medical University?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
