Align your credentials to Johnson Controls' systems
Johnson Controls hires technicians with hands-on experience in building automation, HVAC controls, or fire suppression systems. Document certifications like NATE, NICET, or PLC programming training before applying, as these map directly to their core product lines.
Target roles tied to federal or institutional contracts
Johnson Controls holds large contracts with government facilities, hospitals, and universities. Openings tied to these accounts often have structured headcount and are more likely to include sponsorship as part of the hiring plan, not an afterthought.
Ask HR about their PERM pathway during offer negotiation
Johnson Controls sponsors both H-1B and employment-based Green Cards for technical roles. During offer discussions, ask directly whether the position is eligible for PERM labor certification and what the typical timeline looks like for Engineering Technician classifications.
Search for Engineering Technician openings through Migrate Mate
Filtering by sponsorship history helps you prioritize roles where Johnson Controls has actually filed for technician-level candidates. Use Migrate Mate to surface these positions and avoid applying to listings where sponsorship is ambiguous or unlikely.
Prepare for technical assessments in the interview process
Johnson Controls typically includes hands-on or scenario-based technical screens for Engineering Technician candidates. Reviewing troubleshooting workflows for BAS or HVAC systems before your interview strengthens your case and signals you can contribute quickly, which matters for sponsorship decisions.

Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Engineering Technicians?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Engineering Technician roles. The H-1B requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, which typically means the role demands at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. For technician positions, Johnson Controls often structures the job description around systems engineering or applied technology to satisfy this requirement.
How do I apply for Engineering Technician jobs at Johnson Controls?
You can find current Engineering Technician openings at Johnson Controls through their careers page or by using Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles where Johnson Controls has a sponsorship track record. When applying, tailor your resume to highlight experience with building automation, HVAC, fire systems, or industrial controls, as these align with their core technical hiring areas.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls commonly use for Engineering Technician roles?
Johnson Controls sponsors several visa categories for Engineering Technician positions, including H-1B, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students in STEM programs, J-1 for exchange visitors, and employment-based Green Cards through the EB-2 and EB-3 preference categories. The right pathway depends on your nationality, degree level, and how the specific role is classified.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for Engineering Technician candidates?
Johnson Controls generally looks for candidates with an associate's or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering technology, mechanical engineering, or a related applied field, combined with hands-on experience in building systems, HVAC, fire suppression, or industrial automation. Certifications such as NICET for fire systems or NATE for HVAC are valued and can strengthen a sponsorship case by demonstrating specialized, verifiable competency.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an Engineering Technician offer at Johnson Controls?
Timeline depends on visa type. For H-1B, USCIS opens registration in March, with an October 1 start date for cap-subject cases. Premium processing reduces adjudication to around 15 business days once filed. TN status can be obtained at the border or port of entry for eligible nationals, making it significantly faster. PERM labor certification for a Green Card typically takes one to two years before the I-140 petition stage.
