Job Summary
INVESTIGATOR IN THE BASIC NEUROSCIENCE DIVISION (BND)
AT MCLEAN HOSPITAL
The Department of Psychiatry at Mass General Brigham (MGB) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) invite applications for a full-time faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level from qualified individuals engaged in basic, preclinical systems neuroscience research aimed to improve understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric, neurodevelopmental or substance use disorders.
The position is based at McLean Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital with the largest research program of its kind in the United States. The preclinical research community at McLean offers basic, cell, molecular, and systems neuroscience approaches, complementing neuroimaging, translational and clinical neuroscience targeting a variety of conditions, including (but not limited to) mood and anxiety disorders, drug- and alcohol-related substance use disorders, eating disorders, developmental disorders (e.g., autism), and neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease).
We seek an investigator with a track record of innovation and excellence in basic systems neuroscience research, with particular emphasis on how whole-body effectors (neurosteroids, inflammatory cytokines) and endogenous regulatory systems (e.g., endocannabinoids) modify responses to stress, as well as experience with participating in translational collaborations that bridge the gap between studies in animal models and in humans. Opportunities exist for developing strong collaborations within McLean Hospital and across the MGB and HMS systems.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. or professional doctorate, appropriate postdoctoral experience, and a record of extramural funding and publications indicative of demonstrated expertise.
Candidates must either meet the academic criteria for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. The position offers affiliation with a large clinical and basic neuroscience research program and research infrastructure support. Salary and recruitment package in accordance with Hospital policies, and a Harvard Medical School appointment at the academic rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (full or part-time) will be contingent on meeting the requirements for an HMS appointment and candidate qualifications, including a Massachusetts medical license and being board-certified/board-eligible.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and/or maintain a competitive, independent, and largely externally funded research program and engage in supervision, training, and educational activities that support their program while enriching the MGB and HMS communities.
All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and a concise statement of research interests. Materials should be submitted by email (bcarlezon@mclean.harvard.edu) but addressed to:
Bill Carlezon, PhD and Kerry Ressler, MD PhD
Search Committee Co-Chairs

Align your credentials to clinical physics standards
Mass General Brigham's Physics roles often require CAMPEP-accredited training or board certification from the American Board of Radiology. If your credentials are international, get a formal equivalency evaluation before applying so hiring managers can assess your qualifications without guesswork.
Target departments with active research programs
Physics openings at Mass General Brigham are concentrated in radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, and nuclear medicine. Roles tied to funded research grants are more likely to support H-1B sponsorship, since principal investigators often have dedicated budget for specialized hires.
Search Physics openings using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters open Physics roles at Mass General Brigham by visa sponsorship history, so you're not sorting through listings that won't support your authorization. Set up alerts so you catch new postings in radiation therapy, MRI physics, and research positions early.
Clarify sponsorship intent before the final interview round
Mass General Brigham's academic medical environment means hiring moves through department chairs and HR separately. Ask your recruiter directly whether the specific department has processed H-1B petitions for Physics roles before, not just whether the organization sponsors visas broadly.
Build your offer timeline around USCIS cap deadlines
If you need a new H-1B, your employer must file by the April 1 window for an October 1 start. For Physics roles that require onboarding ahead of a clinical rotation or academic year, work backward from October to negotiate your start date during offer negotiations.
Prepare a strong specialty occupation case for your role
USCIS scrutinizes Physics petitions where the job description overlaps with general engineering or research roles. Get a detailed offer letter that specifies the theoretical and applied physics knowledge required, the equipment or modalities involved, and why a physics degree specifically is necessary for the position.

Find Physics at Mass General Brigham JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Mass General Brigham sponsor H-1B visas for Physics roles?
Yes, Mass General Brigham sponsors H-1B visas for Physics positions, particularly in clinical and research-focused departments like radiation oncology, medical imaging, and nuclear medicine. Sponsorship is handled through the organization's HR and legal teams, and whether a specific role qualifies depends on the department's budget and the position's specialty occupation classification under USCIS guidelines.
How do I apply for Physics jobs at Mass General Brigham?
Applications are submitted through Mass General Brigham's careers portal. Search by department or role type, such as medical physicist, radiation physics, or imaging physics. You can also browse Physics openings filtered by visa sponsorship track record on Migrate Mate, which surfaces active listings and helps you prioritize roles where H-1B sponsorship is a realistic outcome before you invest time in a full application.
Which visa types are commonly used for Physics roles at Mass General Brigham?
The H-1B is the primary work visa for Physics positions at Mass General Brigham, covering roles that qualify as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in physics or a directly related field. Some research-track physicists also enter on J-1 exchange visitor visas through affiliated academic programs, though J-1 status comes with a two-year home residency requirement that affects long-term employment planning.
What qualifications and experience are expected for Physics roles at Mass General Brigham?
Clinical medical physicist roles typically require a master's or doctoral degree from a CAMPEP-accredited program and board certification, or active candidacy for certification through the American Board of Radiology or a comparable body. Research physics roles lean more heavily on doctoral credentials and a publication record. Hands-on experience with specific modalities, such as linac-based radiation therapy, MRI, or PET-CT, is often listed as a requirement rather than a preference in job postings.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for a Physics position?
If you're subject to the H-1B cap, your employer needs to register you in the annual lottery, which opens in March for an October 1 start date. That means you need an offer in hand well before March. Clinical physics residency programs at Mass General Brigham-affiliated hospitals often have match timelines that can align with this window, but confirm with your specific program whether the appointment triggers H-1B filing.
