About the Department
The College of Engineering at NC State University created in the late 1980’s distance education programs to serve the educational needs of the citizens of North Carolina and practicing engineers and computer scientists in the region. The Office of Distance Engineering Education, known as Engineering Online, is responsible for the coordination of synchronous and asynchronous classes, registration of students, handling student issues regarding course delivery, student services, marketing of programs, and working with faculty in the development and delivery of classes.
As part of Engineering Online, NC State’s site-based Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Systems (MES) BSE Program is located on the campus of Craven Community College in Havelock, NC. The MES program serves the residents and businesses in Eastern North Carolina by attracting local students and providing a way for them to earn an NC State engineering degree without leaving the area. Students receive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering courses from the Raleigh campus through live interactive video, and the MES courses are taught by on-site NC State faculty. The program admits approximately twenty students each year and offers them a mentoring environment in which to grow their knowledge of engineering theory and practice. Further information on the program can be found at: https://www.ecfHqngr.ncsu.edu/mes.
The Havelock campus is centrally located and within 45 minutes of historic New Bern and several beach communities such as Emerald Isle, Swansboro, Cape Carteret, Pine Knoll Shores, Morehead City, and Atlantic beach.

Align your credentials with NC State's engineering functions
NC State engineers work across research labs, campus infrastructure, and sponsored federal projects. A degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering maps well to these functions. Credential evaluations from NACES-member services strengthen your application if your degree is from outside the U.S.
Target postings tied to sponsored research grants
Engineering roles funded through federal grants at NC State often have more flexibility for visa sponsorship because the position is already tied to external funding. Look for postings that mention specific research centers or sponsored programs in the job description.
Confirm OPT authorization covers your engineering specialty
STEM OPT extensions apply to engineering graduates and give you up to three years of work authorization. NC State must be enrolled in E-Verify for your STEM OPT extension to be approved, which universities consistently are as federal contractors.
Understand how PERM timelines affect permanent residency paths
If NC State moves you toward an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, the PERM labor certification process through the DOL typically adds 12 to 18 months before USCIS even begins reviewing your immigrant petition. Factor that into your long-term visa planning.
Use Migrate Mate to filter engineering roles by sponsorship type
NC State posts engineering openings across multiple platforms, and not all list sponsorship details upfront. Use Migrate Mate to filter roles at NC State specifically by the visa category that matches your current status, so you only apply to positions where you're eligible.

Find Engineering at North Carolina State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does North Carolina State University sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, NC State sponsors H-1B visas for engineering roles, particularly positions tied to research programs or ongoing technical operations. As a large public research university, NC State has an established international hiring process and works through its Office of International Services to file H-1B petitions. Cap-subject H-1B petitions require registration in April, so your start date and the timing of your offer both matter.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at North Carolina State University?
Engineering roles at NC State are posted through the university's official jobs portal at jobs.ncsu.edu. Applications typically require a resume, cover letter, and sometimes a portfolio or list of technical competencies depending on the role. For international candidates, it helps to note your current visa status and authorization type early in the process. You can also browse open engineering positions filtered by sponsorship eligibility through Migrate Mate.
Which visa types does NC State commonly use for Engineering positions?
NC State sponsors several visa categories for engineering hires, including H-1B for specialty occupation roles, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering disciplines, and J-1 for research-focused positions. F-1 OPT and STEM OPT are common entry points, particularly for recent graduates joining research teams before transitioning to H-1B sponsorship.
What qualifications does NC State expect for Engineering roles?
Most engineering positions at NC State require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a directly related engineering discipline. Research-oriented roles frequently prefer or require a master's or doctoral degree. Practical experience with relevant tools, lab environments, or project management frameworks adds weight to your application. For H-1B eligibility specifically, your degree field must correspond directly to the engineering duties in the job description.
How do I handle visa timing when pursuing an Engineering offer at NC State?
Timing depends heavily on your current status. If you need a new H-1B, petitions can only be filed starting April 1 for an October 1 start date, which can create a gap if your OPT expires sooner. TN and E-3 visas have no annual cap and can be processed on a rolling basis, making them faster options if you qualify. Discuss your timeline with NC State's Office of International Services as early as possible in the offer process.
