BACKGROUND ON ONE CITY SCHOOLS
One City Schools is a Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization that provides high quality educational opportunities for young children. Our mission is to seed a new model of public education that ensures young children are on track to succeed in a college or career preparatory program from birth through high school graduation. Our vision is of a Greater Madison community (and country) where all children are prepared to contribute and succeed as adults. More importantly, we aim to partner with families and the broader community to cultivate children who become free, global and deep thinkers, curious learners, effective problem solvers, humanitarians, happy people and young people who care about the world around them.
One City Schools focuses on a two-generation public school, authorized by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents, that provides a tuition-free education to children and works directly with families to ensure children are inspired, learning, growing and achieving to their full potential. OCES is also the only public school in Wisconsin that offers both a longer school day and longer school year, including 60-minutes of co-curricular extended-day learning academies in Sports, Fitness, STEM, Girl Scouts, Boys to Men and Creative and Performing Arts. However, our educators work a standard 8-hour workday. Recently, we moved into our permanent home, a $12 million facility located at 1707 W. Broadway in Monona, Wisconsin, a small city located on the South Side of our capital city just three minutes from our current location. This 13.5 acre campus includes a 157,000 school facility that will eventually serve grades K-12, and a new 140,000 square foot athletic center with a high school/college-sized indoor soccer field, two high school/college sized basketball courts, weight training and cardio rooms, locker rooms, and underground access to our school facility. Our campus also includes a wooded nature area for science and outdoor learning, and outdoor play space. The campus is situated just 5 blocks from Lake Monona, just north of Lake Waubesa and 10 minutes from downtown Madison.

Target roles that align with certified teaching needs
One City Schools operates in a credential-driven field. Focus your applications on classroom teaching roles and specialist positions where your subject matter expertise and degree directly match a documented staffing need, these are the roles most likely to receive sponsorship consideration.
Understand how OPT and CPT fit into the hiring timeline
One City Schools has sponsored both F-1 OPT and CPT candidates. If you're on a student visa, lead with your current work authorization status and make clear how much time remains, school hiring timelines are fixed, and administrators need to plan around academic calendars.
Align your application to the school year hiring cycle
Education employers like One City Schools hire on a predictable cycle, with most openings posted in late winter and spring for the following academic year. Applying in January through April significantly improves your chances of being considered before positions are filled.
Highlight subject-area certification or eligibility
For H-1B sponsorship at a school, your degree must align with the subject you'll teach. Confirm your credentials meet Wisconsin state teaching requirements and note any pending certifications, demonstrating you're licensure-ready reduces administrative friction for the hiring team.
Use Migrate Mate to confirm sponsorship history before applying
Not every school actively sponsors visas, so targeting verified sponsors saves time. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and focus your effort on employers like One City Schools with a documented track record.
Prepare for a mission-driven interview process
One City Schools emphasizes educational equity and community impact. When interviewing, connect your professional background to that mission directly, candidates who articulate why they want to work in under-resourced schools, not just any school, tend to resonate more strongly with hiring panels.

Find One City Schools JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does One City Schools sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, One City Schools has sponsored H-1B visas for employees. The H-1B is the most common pathway for international educators in specialty occupation roles, particularly subject-area teachers whose position requires a specific bachelor's degree or higher. If you're targeting a teaching or specialist role, the H-1B is the most relevant visa to discuss with their hiring team.
Which visa types does One City Schools sponsor?
One City Schools has sponsored H-1B visas and has also supported F-1 students through OPT and CPT. This makes it a viable employer for recent international graduates working in education, as well as experienced professionals seeking H-1B sponsorship. TN visas are also listed among the types they've facilitated for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying roles.
Which roles at One City Schools are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Sponsorship at One City Schools is most commonly associated with classroom teaching positions, particularly in subject areas where there's a documented need for credentialed specialists. Roles requiring a specific degree field, such as mathematics, science, or special education, are better positioned for H-1B sponsorship than general administrative positions, which typically don't meet specialty occupation criteria.
How do I time my application to One City Schools for the best chance of sponsorship?
Education employers follow strict hiring calendars. One City Schools typically recruits for the following school year between January and April. Applying early in that window gives the school time to complete any visa filing well before the academic year starts. For H-1B candidates, keep in mind that cap-subject petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date.
How do I find open visa-sponsored jobs at One City Schools?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find open roles at One City Schools that are tied to real sponsorship history. Rather than guessing which postings will support visa applications, Migrate Mate lets you filter by visa type and employer so you can see verified sponsors in the education sector and apply with confidence that sponsorship is genuinely on the table.
