Job Title: Mechanical Engineer II (Opto-Mechanical)
Location: Santa Clara, CA (onsite)
Group: Opto-Mechanical Engineering
Role Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and highly hands-on Mechanical Engineer II to lead part-level mechanical design efforts for the modernization of CRDS (Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy) gas analyzers. This role is heavily focused on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA), with direct responsibility for taking precision mechanical components and subassemblies from concept through production release. The ideal candidate is a strong individual contributor with deep expertise in mechanical design, materials selection, manufacturing processes, and production transition. You will work closely with machine shops, contract manufacturers, and cross-functional partners to ensure designs are robust, manufacturable, verifiable, and scalable.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Mechanical Design & Development
- Own part-level and subassembly mechanical design for next-generation and modernized CRDS gas analyzer platforms, from early concept through production release.
- Apply DFM/DFA principles throughout the design process to reduce part count, simplify assembly, improve yield, and lower cost.
- Design precision mechanical components including machined parts, sheet metal, castings, and assemblies requiring tight tolerances.
- Select appropriate materials and surface treatments considering performance, manufacturability, cost, environmental exposure, and long-term reliability.
Manufacturing & Supplier Collaboration
- Work directly with local machine shops and contract manufacturers to review designs, iterate for manufacturability, and resolve fabrication issues.
- Support supplier sourcing, quote reviews, and vendor technical discussions.
- Verify that fabricated parts and assemblies meet engineering drawings and specifications, including hands-on inspection and fit checks.
Prototyping, Build & Tooling
- Build and debug mechanical subassemblies and prototypes, supporting alpha, beta, and pilot builds.
- Design precision tooling, fixtures, gauges, and assembly stations to support repeatable manufacturing and testing.
- Define assembly sequences and support development of work instructions and SOPs in collaboration with manufacturing teams.
CAD, Drawings & Data Management
- Create detailed mechanical drawings (ASME Y14.5) including GD&T, tolerance stacks, and manufacturing notes.
- Develop and manage CAD models using SolidWorks, including top-down and bottom-up design approaches.
- Follow best practices for SolidWorks PDM, including file structure, version control, release workflows, and revision management.
Simulation, Analysis & Verification
- Use simulation and engineering analysis as part of the design strategy, including stress, fatigue, structural, thermal analysis with reliability considerations and life modeling.
- Support and interpret results from environmental testing, including shock, vibration, and thermal cycling.
- Collaborate with test and systems engineers to correlate analytical predictions with empirical results.
NPI & Production Transition
- Lead mechanical aspects of New Product Introduction (NPI) from prototype through pilot and production ramp.
- Support design transfer to manufacturing, including ECOs, drawing releases, and production readiness reviews.
- Assist with production issue resolution, root cause analysis, and corrective actions during early manufacturing.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (Master’s preferred).
- 5+ years of progressive experience in mechanical design for precision instrumentation, electromechanical products, or similar hardware systems.
- Demonstrated expertise in DFM/DFA, tolerance analysis, and production-oriented design.
- Strong hands-on experience working with machine shops and manufacturers.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks and experience using SolidWorks PDM in a controlled engineering environment.
- Solid understanding of materials selection, manufacturing processes, and finishing techniques.
- Experience performing and interpreting mechanical simulations and analyses.
- Experience with environmental qualification testing (shock, vibration, thermal).
- Proven success transitioning products from NPI to production.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with gas analyzers, analytical instruments, or opto-mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with clean-room or contamination-sensitive assemblies.
- Experience designing tooling and assembly stations for low- to mid-volume production.
- Strong documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Job Roles at Picarro Companies
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Picarro Visa Sponsorship USA
Target technical and engineering roles first
Picarro's sponsorship history is concentrated in specialized technical positions. If your background is in instrumentation, photonics, software engineering, or hardware development, you're more likely to find a role that aligns with their sponsored hiring patterns in the medical devices space.
Understand the H-1B and Green Card pathways Picarro uses
Picarro sponsors both H-1B visas and employment-based Green Cards, including EB-2 and EB-3 categories. Understanding both pathways before you apply helps you ask informed questions about long-term sponsorship intent during the interview process.
Check whether your OPT or CPT timeline aligns
Picarro accepts F-1 OPT and CPT candidates, making it accessible to international students still completing their studies or in their post-graduation work authorization window. Confirm your remaining OPT duration before applying to avoid a sponsorship gap.
TN visa holders should highlight cross-border relevance
Picarro sponsors TN visas, which benefit Canadian and Mexican professionals in qualifying occupations. If you're applying on a TN, emphasize how your scientific or engineering credentials meet the specific occupational requirements that support TN classification in the medical devices industry.
Research Picarro's active openings before reaching out
Picarro hires selectively, so timing your application to active headcount matters. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and find current Picarro openings where visa sponsorship is confirmed, not just implied.
Prepare for a technically rigorous interview process
Medical device and precision instrumentation companies like Picarro typically run deep technical screens. Demonstrating domain expertise, not just general engineering competence, signals that you're the kind of specialized hire for whom sponsorship investment makes business sense.

Does Picarro sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Picarro sponsors H-1B visas. The company has an established track record of filing H-1B petitions for skilled professionals, particularly in technical and engineering disciplines. If you're currently on H-1B status or will need initial sponsorship, Picarro is a legitimate target, especially for roles in instrumentation, software, and hardware development within its medical devices and environmental sensing business.
What visa types does Picarro sponsor?
Picarro sponsors H-1B, EB-2, EB-3, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN visas. This makes the company accessible to a broad range of international candidates, from students on OPT and CPT to professionals seeking long-term permanent residence pathways. Both nonimmigrant and immigrant visa categories are covered, which is a positive sign for candidates thinking beyond short-term work authorization.
Which roles or departments at Picarro are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Sponsorship at Picarro tends to follow its core technical functions. Roles in electrical engineering, software engineering, optical engineering, and scientific research are the most consistent candidates for sponsored hiring, given the company's focus on precision instruments and medical devices. Business and administrative roles are less commonly sponsored. Candidates with niche expertise in laser spectroscopy or analytical instrumentation are especially well-positioned.
How do I find open jobs at Picarro that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most reliable way to browse Picarro job openings filtered by verified sponsorship history. Rather than guessing whether a listing includes sponsorship, Migrate Mate surfaces roles from confirmed sponsors so you know before you apply. This saves time and reduces the frustration of pursuing positions where visa support was never on the table in the first place.
How do I approach the application timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship at Picarro?
H-1B sponsorship at Picarro requires planning around the annual cap lottery, which opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you're transitioning from OPT, make sure your application and offer are timed so your employer can file before your OPT expires. Starting conversations with Picarro's recruiting team in the fall or winter gives you the best window to align a potential offer with the H-1B filing season.
