Role Overview: As a Senior Data Engineer specializing in Natural Gas and Power, you will support the design, development, and optimization of advanced data infrastructure and products that support critical trading, risk, and market analytics functions. You will collaborate closely with traders, quantitative analysts, risk managers, and IT stakeholders to ensure data systems are scalable, secure, and aligned with the strategic goals of the energy business. In addition to hands-on engineering, you will play a pivotal role supporting the data architecture roadmap, mentoring engineers, and driving innovation in data-driven decision-making across the Natural Gas and Power value chain.
Main Responsibilities
- Contribute to the definition of the target data architecture (lake/lakehouse, streaming, event-driven) and technology choices for high-volume time-series, market, and transactional data.
- Build and operate end-to-end pipelines (ingest → quality → transform → serve) with strong SLAs/SLOs, lineage, and observability.
- Establish coding, testing, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code standards; drive adoption of data governance, cataloging, and access controls.
- Own capacity, performance, reliability, and cost efficiency of data platforms across environments (dev/test/prod).
- Ensure data quality, lineage, and observability across all layers of the data stack.
Required Skill set:
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field.
- 7+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 3 years in a senior development role.
- Strong and proven experience in Power (and ideally Natural Gas) trading commodities is mandatory, balancing mechanisms, and regulatory frameworks (e.g., REMIT, EMIR).
- Strong experience building and operating data platforms on AWS is required.
- Azure: ADLS Gen2, Event Hubs, Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks (Spark), Azure Functions, Azure Data Factory/Databricks Workflows, Key Vault, Azure Monitoring/Log Analytics; IaC with Terraform/Bicep; CI/CD with Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
- Snowflake (on Azure or multi-cloud): Warehousing design, Streams & Tasks, Snowpipe/Snowpipe Streaming, Time Travel & Fail-safe, RBAC & row/column security, external tables over ADLS, performance tuning & cost governance.
- Programming & Engineering Practices: Strong OOP in Python and Java/Scala; SDLC leadership, DevOps mindset, TDD/BDD, code reviews, automated testing (unit/integration/contract), packaging and dependency management, API design (REST/gRPC).
- Web & Data Acquisition: Robust web scraping and ingestion with Scrapy, Requests, Playwright/Selenium; scheduling, retries/exponential backoff, change-data capture; ethical/legal collection practices (robots.txt, terms).
- Orchestration & Quality: Airflow/ADF/Databricks Jobs, data contracts, Great Expectations (or similar), lineage/catalog (e.g., Purview), metrics/observability (Prometheus/Grafana/Application Insights).
- Dataframe oriented programming: pandas, spark/snowpark dataframes, SQL data transformation.
Additional Skills
- Designing low-latency pipelines for sub-second to minute-level telemetry, weather and market data; tuning Spark Structured Streaming/Flink/Kafka Streams.
- Quality & Reconciliation for telemetry and market submissions (gap fill, resampling, deduplication, anomaly detection, schema evolution).
- Serving Patterns: time-series stores and query layers (e.g., Delta Lake over ADLS, Iceberg, materialized views in Snowflake), APIs and event streams for downstream consumption.

Align Your Portfolio to Synechron's Client Stack
Synechron's Data Science work is heavily oriented toward financial services clients, so projects demonstrating risk modeling, fraud detection, or NLP for financial data carry more weight than general-purpose machine learning work.
Confirm OPT Authorization Dates Before Applying
If you're on F-1 OPT, verify your I-20 end date and EAD expiration before submitting applications. Synechron files H-1B petitions in April, so your OPT window needs to bridge through October 1 of the filing year.
Target Roles That Qualify as Specialty Occupations
USCIS scrutinizes Data Science Engineer titles heavily at consulting firms. Focus on postings that specify a degree requirement in computer science, statistics, or a directly related field to strengthen your specialty occupation case.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Active Synechron Openings
Synechron's sponsorship-eligible Data Science Engineer roles are not always easy to identify through general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter for open positions at Synechron that are actively accepting sponsored candidates.
Request the PERM Timeline Early in Offer Negotiations
If you're targeting a Green Card path, ask during the offer stage whether Synechron initiates PERM labor certification for this role category. DOL's PERM process typically takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 can be filed.
Verify Employment Authorization Through E-Verify Records
Synechron participates in E-Verify, which means your work authorization is confirmed electronically on your start date. Have your visa documents, I-94 record, and EAD or approval notice organized and ready before onboarding to avoid processing delays.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Synechron sponsor H-1B visas for Data Science Engineers?
Yes, Synechron sponsors H-1B visas for Data Science Engineers. The company operates as a technology and consulting firm serving financial services clients, and it has an established pattern of supporting H-1B petitions for technical roles in this function. Sponsorship is typically tied to a specific project placement, so having a confirmed engagement is generally a prerequisite before the petition is filed.
How do I apply for Data Science Engineer jobs at Synechron?
You can apply directly through Synechron's careers portal or find sponsorship-eligible openings through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles that accept visa sponsorship. When applying, tailor your resume to highlight domain-specific machine learning work, particularly anything tied to financial services or enterprise data infrastructure, since that aligns closely with Synechron's client base.
Which visa types does Synechron commonly use for Data Science Engineer roles?
Synechron sponsors H-1B visas as the primary work authorization path for Data Science Engineers, and also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for candidates earlier in the pipeline. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, Synechron has filed under EB-2 and EB-3 preference categories. TN visa status is also available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying roles.
What qualifications does Synechron expect for a Data Science Engineer role?
Synechron typically expects a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field. Hands-on experience with Python, SQL, and machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch is standard. Given Synechron's financial services focus, familiarity with time-series analysis, risk modeling, or regulatory data environments adds meaningful differentiation in the hiring process.
How do I understand the H-1B filing timeline if I'm applying to Synechron on OPT?
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, your employer needs to file before your EAD expires, which means Synechron must initiate the process well ahead of the April filing window. If you're selected in the lottery, a cap-gap provision extends your OPT automatically through September 30, protecting your work authorization during the transition period.
