Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
U.S. medical employers require Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification before sponsoring an H-1B for a physician role. Confirm your ECFMG status is current and your residency or fellowship training is completed before submitting applications to University of Minnesota Physicians.
Target UMN Physicians specialty departments directly
University of Minnesota Physicians operates across multiple clinical departments tied to the University of Minnesota Medical School. Identify which specialty aligns with your training and apply through that department's recruitment pipeline, since hiring decisions and sponsorship approvals often originate at the departmental level.
Understand how H-1B cap exemption applies here
Because University of Minnesota Physicians is affiliated with a nonprofit academic medical center, physician roles here may qualify for H-1B cap exemption. This means you can file outside the annual lottery window, significantly improving your timeline for starting work.
Clarify Green Card sponsorship during offer negotiation
UMN Physicians sponsors both H-1B and employment-based Green Cards for Medical Doctors. During offer discussions, ask explicitly whether the role includes EB-2 or EB-3 PERM sponsorship and what the typical timeline looks like from the employer's side before signing.
Browse open Medical Doctor roles on Migrate Mate
To find Medical Doctor positions at University of Minnesota Physicians that are open to sponsored candidates, search Migrate Mate. It filters roles by visa type so you can identify H-1B and Green Card eligible openings without manually screening individual job postings.
Align your J-1 waiver status before the offer stage
Many international physicians complete residency on a J-1 visa and must secure a waiver before an employer can file an H-1B petition. If you are in this situation, confirm your Conrad 30 or federal agency waiver is approved or in progress before accepting an offer from University of Minnesota Physicians.

Find Medical Doctor at University of Minnesota Physicians JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Minnesota Physicians sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, University of Minnesota Physicians sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctor roles. Because of the organization's affiliation with a nonprofit academic medical center, these positions may qualify for H-1B cap exemption, meaning sponsorship is not dependent on winning the annual USCIS lottery. This makes the pathway more predictable for international physicians compared to for-profit employers.
Which visa types are commonly used for Medical Doctor roles at University of Minnesota Physicians?
The most common visa pathways for Medical Doctors at University of Minnesota Physicians are the H-1B for initial work authorization and employment-based Green Cards, typically EB-2 or EB-3, for permanent residency. Physicians completing a J-1 residency or fellowship will need to resolve their two-year home residency requirement through a waiver before an H-1B petition can be filed.
What qualifications and experience are expected for Medical Doctor roles at University of Minnesota Physicians?
You will need to hold an M.D. or D.O. degree, have completed relevant residency and any required fellowship training, and be board certified or board eligible in your specialty. ECFMG certification is required for internationally trained physicians. Minnesota state medical licensure is also a condition of employment, and some roles require prior clinical experience in a specific subspecialty.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at University of Minnesota Physicians?
You can find and apply for Medical Doctor positions at University of Minnesota Physicians through their careers portal or by searching Migrate Mate, which filters active openings by visa sponsorship eligibility. Applications typically require a CV, medical school and training credentials, board certification documentation, and references from prior clinical supervisors. Departmental recruiters often conduct initial outreach before a formal panel interview.
How do I estimate the timeline from application to starting work as a sponsored Medical Doctor?
The timeline depends on your current visa status and whether a J-1 waiver is involved. For a straightforward H-1B filing with cap exemption, USCIS standard processing runs several months, though premium processing is available for faster adjudication. If PERM labor certification is part of your Green Card process, plan for a significantly longer timeline, often one to two years or more before an immigrant visa becomes current.
