Align your credentials with Florida licensing requirements
Florida requires state licensure for many construction roles, including general contractors and engineers. Before applying, verify whether your overseas credentials or degree needs evaluation through a NACES-approved agency so USF's HR team can confirm your eligibility quickly.
Target facilities and capital projects openings directly
USF's Facilities Management and Planning division drives most Construction hiring. Filter your job search to this department specifically, since those postings are more likely to carry visa sponsorship approval than roles sourced through third-party contractors working on campus.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsoring Construction roles
Not every USF Construction posting explicitly states sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to browse roles at USF that have a confirmed sponsorship track record, saving you time on applications that would never move forward for international candidates.
Understand how PERM affects your construction role timeline
If USF pursues an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card for your Construction role, DOL's PERM labor certification process can take twelve months or more before USCIS even receives your petition. Factor this into any negotiation around your start date or OPT expiration.
Confirm your visa type works for full-time campus employment
USF sponsors H-1B, TN, J-1, and F-1 OPT for Construction positions, but eligibility depends on your role's classification as a specialty occupation. Trades-heavy roles may face more scrutiny than project management or engineering positions when USCIS reviews the H-1B petition.
Negotiate your H-1B filing before your OPT expiration window closes
If you're on F-1 OPT, coordinate with USF's HR and international services office to ensure your H-1B petition is filed well before your OPT end date. A 60-day gap in employment authorization can disqualify you from continuing in the role.

Find Construction at University of South Florida JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of South Florida sponsor H-1B visas for Construction roles?
Yes, University of South Florida sponsors H-1B visas for Construction positions where the role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards. This typically applies to construction project managers, facilities engineers, and similar roles requiring at minimum a bachelor's degree in a related field. Trades or labor-focused roles may not meet the specialty occupation threshold required for H-1B approval.
How do I apply for Construction jobs at University of South Florida?
Applications go through USF's official careers portal. Search for Construction or Facilities Management roles, and apply directly with your resume and any required licensure documentation. If you're an international candidate, you can also browse verified sponsoring Construction openings at USF through Migrate Mate before applying, which helps you focus on roles where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Which visa types does University of South Florida commonly use for Construction positions?
USF sponsors several visa categories for Construction roles depending on the position and your background. H-1B is common for specialty occupation roles like project management or engineering. TN visas apply for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering classifications. F-1 OPT and CPT are available for recent graduates, and J-1 is used for certain exchange and research-adjacent positions within facilities.
What qualifications does University of South Florida expect for sponsored Construction roles?
Expectations vary by role level, but project management and engineering positions generally require a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a closely related field, plus relevant professional experience. Florida state licensure is often preferred or required for senior positions. For H-1B sponsorship specifically, your degree must align directly with the job duties to satisfy USCIS's specialty occupation definition.
How long does the visa sponsorship process typically take for a USF Construction role?
For H-1B, standard processing through USCIS takes three to six months, though premium processing can reduce USCIS adjudication to around 15 business days. If your path involves a Green Card through PERM, expect the full process to extend well beyond a year. Starting conversations with USF's international services team early in your hiring process gives you the most flexibility with timing.
