Verify Your ECFMG Certification Early
WellSpan's credentialing process for Family Physicians requires ECFMG certification before any visa petition moves forward. Start this verification well ahead of your target start date, since delays here will stall your H-1B or J-1 filing regardless of offer timing.
Target WellSpan's Underserved Service Areas
WellSpan operates across rural and semi-rural Pennsylvania counties that qualify for HPSA and MUA designations. Physicians placed in these areas often have access to Conrad 30 J-1 waiver slots, which can accelerate your path to an H-1B without requiring a national interest waiver petition.
Align Your Board Certification Timeline With Filing Windows
WellSpan typically expects Family Physicians to hold or be eligible for ABFM board certification. If you're still in residency, confirm your eligibility window so your employer can time the H-1B petition filing accurately around USCIS cap registration in March.
Ask Recruiters Directly About EB-2 NIW Support
Large integrated health systems like WellSpan sometimes support EB-2 National Interest Waiver petitions for physicians committing to underserved communities. Raise this in the offer negotiation stage rather than after signing, so both parties can document the community benefit agreement DOL and USCIS expect.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Roles Faster
WellSpan posts Family Physician openings across multiple service lines and locations. Use Migrate Mate to filter these roles by visa type so you're only reviewing positions where sponsorship is confirmed before you invest time preparing your application materials.
Confirm LCA Wage Level Before Negotiating Salary
WellSpan's HR team files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting your H-1B petition. The prevailing wage level attached to the Family Physician role affects your minimum offer, so review the LCA wage tier for your work location before finalizing any compensation discussion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WellSpan Health sponsor H-1B visas for Family Physicians?
Yes, WellSpan Health sponsors H-1B visas for Family Physicians. As a large integrated health system with ongoing physician recruitment needs, WellSpan has an established process for filing H-1B petitions, including the required Labor Condition Application through DOL. If you receive an offer, confirm with the recruiter that the specific position includes H-1B support before accepting.
How do I apply for Family Physician jobs at WellSpan Health?
You can browse open Family Physician positions at WellSpan Health through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility before applying. Applications typically require a current CV, copies of your medical degree and residency completion documentation, ECFMG certification status, and board certification or eligibility confirmation. Applying directly through WellSpan's careers portal is the standard path once you've identified the right opening.
Which visa types does WellSpan Health commonly use for Family Physician roles?
WellSpan Health sponsors H-1B, J-1, TN visa, F-1 OPT, and immigrant visa pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for Family Physicians. J-1 is common for physicians completing residency exchanges, and Conrad 30 waivers are relevant for those working in designated shortage areas. TN visa applies to Canadian and Mexican physicians with qualifying credentials under USMCA.
What qualifications does WellSpan Health expect from Family Physician candidates?
WellSpan expects Family Physicians to hold an MD or DO from an accredited institution, ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, and active or pending ABFM board certification. Pennsylvania state medical licensure is required before your start date. Residency completion in a U.S.-accredited Family Medicine program is standard, and WellSpan's credentialing office will verify all documents independently before privileges are granted.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Family Physician position at WellSpan Health?
The timeline depends on your visa type. H-1B cap-subject petitions require registration in March with an October 1 start date at the earliest, meaning you should secure your offer at least six months in advance. J-1 Conrad 30 waiver processing through a state agency typically takes three to five months before an H-1B can be filed. PERM-based Green Card processes for EB-2 or EB-3 can take one to three years depending on your country of birth and priority date.
