INTRODUCTION
At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives. Our wearable technology and digital experiences translate complex physiological data into clear, personalized insights that help members improve their fitness, health, and recovery. The Growth Team at WHOOP is a fast-paced, experimentation-driven group focused on driving user acquisition, activation, engagement, and retention. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Growth team, you will own and drive the technical direction of our web experiences, including our join flow, checkout, and shop that directly impact conversion, revenue, and member engagement. You will lead cross-functional initiatives from technical planning through rollout, mentor engineers across the team, and shape the architecture and practices that allow Growth to move quickly and confidently at scale.
RESPONSIBILITES
- Own the architecture and technical direction of WHOOP's web experiences, including our Next.js-based join flow, Cloudflare Workers edge infrastructure, and Stripe-powered checkout
- Lead cross-functional projects end-to-end from brainstorm and technical planning through implementation, QA, rollout, and post-launch analysis, partnering closely with Product, Design, and Analytics

- Drive frontend performance, accessibility, and reliability across devices and browsers, establishing standards and monitoring that the team can build on
- Write clean, well-tested, production-quality code in TypeScript/React/Next.js and integrate deeply with backend services, payment systems (Stripe), and ecommerce platforms (CommerceTools)
- Author and review technical plans, identify architectural tradeoffs, and make sound judgment calls that balance speed with long-term maintainability
- Mentor and develop other engineers through code review, pairing, and technical guidance, raising the bar for quality and velocity across the web surface
- Participate in on-call rotations and incident response; lead postmortems and drive improvements that prevent recurrence
- Contribute to Growth's engineering culture through documentation, process improvements, and knowledge sharing
QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of professional experience in frontend software engineering, with deep expertise in TypeScript, React, and modern web frameworks (Next.js strongly preferred)
- Track record of owning and delivering complex, cross-functional web projects from technical design through production rollout
- Strong understanding of web performance optimization, edge computing (e.g., Cloudflare Workers), and responsive design at scale
- Experience integrating frontend applications with payment systems (Stripe preferred), RESTful APIs, and third-party platforms
- Demonstrated ability to design and run meaningful A/B tests and make data-informed decisions in a growth or product engineering context
- Experience with observability and monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog, Sentry, Amplitude) to proactively identify and resolve production issues
- Proven ability to mentor engineers, lead technical discussions, and influence engineering practices across a team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable operating in an async-first, cross-functional environment
- Bonus: Experience with ecommerce platforms (CommerceTools), feature flag / experimentation infrastructure, or subscription/membership business models

Frame your systems experience around biometric data
Whoop's backend handles continuous streams of physiological data from wearables. Before applying, reframe your resume around high-throughput data pipelines, time-series processing, or health metrics infrastructure so your experience maps directly to their core engineering problems.
Target roles requiring distributed systems depth
Whoop backend postings consistently emphasize distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and low-latency APIs. Prioritize open roles that list these explicitly over generalist backend titles, since specialty occupation alignment strengthens your H-1B petition and makes the sponsorship case cleaner.
Clarify OPT and CPT eligibility before your first interview
Whoop sponsors both F-1 OPT and CPT, but each requires different employer paperwork timelines. Know your exact OPT end date and whether you're in your STEM extension window before the offer stage so you can answer their HR team's questions without delay.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active Backend Engineer openings
Whoop's open backend roles shift frequently across teams. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Backend Engineer positions at Whoop that are open to visa sponsorship, so you're applying to live postings rather than chasing roles that have already closed.
Request written confirmation of H-1B filing timeline at offer
Once you have an offer, ask HR directly whether they'll file your H-1B petition for the April 1 USCIS window or use cap-exempt status if you qualify. Getting this in writing before you accept prevents ambiguity if your start date falls near the October 1 activation date.
Prepare a degree-to-role mapping document for your petition
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims for backend engineering roles. Assemble a document linking your specific degree field to Whoop's technical requirements before your employer's attorney begins the I-129 preparation, as it reduces back-and-forth and strengthens the petition.

Find Backend Engineer at Whoop JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Whoop sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Engineers?
Yes, Whoop sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Engineer roles. Their backend engineering positions typically satisfy USCIS specialty occupation requirements given the technical depth involved, including distributed systems design and real-time data infrastructure. If you receive an offer, Whoop's HR team coordinates with immigration counsel to file the I-129 petition on your behalf.
Which visa types does Whoop commonly sponsor for Backend Engineers?
Whoop sponsors H-1B visas as the primary long-term option for Backend Engineers. For candidates currently in school or on post-graduation status, F-1 CPT and F-1 OPT are also supported, allowing you to start work while a longer-term petition is prepared. TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose role qualifies under USMCA.
How do I apply for Backend Engineer jobs at Whoop?
Browse active Backend Engineer openings on Whoop's careers page or use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Whoop roles open to visa sponsorship. Tailor your application to highlight backend systems work relevant to wearable technology or health data platforms. Roles fill quickly, so applying within the first two weeks of a posting going live improves your chances significantly.
What qualifications and experience does Whoop expect for Backend Engineers?
Whoop's backend engineering roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Practically, they look for hands-on experience with distributed systems, RESTful API design, cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, and high-throughput data processing. Familiarity with health or sensor data pipelines is a meaningful differentiator given their core product.
How do I plan my visa timeline when targeting a Backend Engineer role at Whoop?
If you're pursuing H-1B sponsorship, the critical date is April 1, when USCIS opens the annual registration window. Offers made in Q1 can target that cycle for an October 1 start. For F-1 OPT holders, your authorized period must cover your anticipated start date. Confirm with Whoop's HR team which fiscal quarter they're hiring for so your status and their filing window align.
