INTRODUCTION
At WHOOP, we’re on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies, behaviors, and daily lives.
WHOOP Labs is the research and physical product testing arm of WHOOP. We conduct human-centered research and hardware validation to ensure our devices, components, and systems meet the highest standards of scientific rigor, usability, and performance.
WHOOP is hiring a Senior Research Manager, Physical Product to lead and scale research efforts supporting hardware advanced development and physical product innovation. This is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping research strategy across the hardware lifecycle—from early concept through NPI and continuous improvement. As a strategic partner, program leader, and people manager, you will build deep cross-functional relationships, drive operational excellence across complex research programs, and develop a high-performing team that delivers rigorous, high-impact research.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary research partner to Hardware, Systems, Product, Signal Processing, and Quality teams, representing WHOOP Labs in roadmap and planning discussions and ensuring research strategy aligns with hardware priorities and long-term product vision.
- Shape how research informs decision-making across the physical product lifecycle by advocating for rigorous, data-driven development practices and translating benchtop validation into meaningful human subject research.
- Own intake, scoping, prioritization, resourcing, and execution of physical product research initiatives, partnering closely with Program Management to manage risk, communicate progress, and drive operational excellence across research workflows and lab operations.
- Provide senior-level leadership for hardware validation study design, protocol development, benchmarking methodologies, test method development, and mixed-methods research, ensuring scientific rigor and actionable insights.
- Serve as a senior individual contributor on complex hardware validation initiatives while championing participant experience and best practices in human subjects research.
- Manage, coach, and develop a team of researchers and coordinators, fostering strong research craft, operational discipline, cross-functional collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Human Factors, Biomedical Engineering, Design Research, Psychology, Exercise Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience conducting research for physical products, ideally within hardware, health technology, wearables, or consumer product environments, with demonstrated experience bridging technical validation and human subject research.
- 3+ years of people management experience, including coaching, performance development, team scaling, and leading cross-functional research programs across hardware development lifecycles (NPI through CI).
- Strong understanding of hardware systems and experience operating within engineering-driven product development environments.
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships, influence without direct authority, and communicate effectively with senior stakeholders through written, verbal, and executive-level presentations.
- Experience managing research vendors and external partners, coupled with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to navigate ambiguity in fast-paced environments.
- Strong technological fluency, including experience with data management systems and leveraging AI tools to improve operational efficiency while maintaining research rigor and quality standards.
- Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.
Interested in the role, but don’t meet every qualification? We encourage you to still apply! At WHOOP, we believe there is much more to a candidate than what is written on paper, and we value character as much as experience. As we continue to build a diverse and inclusive environment, we encourage anyone who is interested in this role to apply.
WHOOP is an Equal Opportunity Employer and participates in E-verify to determine employment eligibility. It is unlawful in Massachusetts to require or administer a lie detector test as a condition of employment or continued employment. An employer who violates this law shall be subject to criminal penalties and civil liability.
The WHOOP compensation philosophy is designed to attract, motivate, and retain exceptional talent by offering competitive base salaries, meaningful equity, and consistent pay practices that reflect our mission and core values.
At WHOOP, we view total compensation as the combination of base salary, equity, and benefits, with equity serving as a key differentiator that aligns our employees with the long-term success of the company and allows every member of our corporate team to own part of WHOOP and share in the company’s long-term growth and success.
The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $120,000 - $160,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training.
In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also receive benefits and a generous equity package.
These ranges may be modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and organizational needs. While most offers will typically fall toward the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on the candidate’s specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment with the role’s requirements.
Tips for Finding Product Engineer Jobs at Whoop
Tailor your portfolio to wearable product cycles
Whoop ships hardware and software together on tight iteration cycles. Document projects where you owned both sides of a product feature, from sensor data pipelines to user-facing interfaces, so hiring managers can map your experience directly to their workflow.
Clarify your OPT or CPT timeline early
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your STEM extension eligibility before your first recruiter call. Whoop's hiring timeline for Product Engineers can run several months, and knowing your authorization runway helps both you and the team plan around H-1B petition filing windows.
Search for open roles through Migrate Mate
Whoop posts Product Engineer openings across multiple channels, and not all listings flag sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Whoop roles that support your visa type so you're only applying where your immigration situation is already accounted for.
Align your application to USCIS specialty occupation standards
H-1B approval for Product Engineer roles depends on the position meeting USCIS specialty occupation criteria. Roles blending hardware and software product work qualify more cleanly when your resume reflects a specific degree field, such as electrical engineering or computer science, tied directly to the job duties.
Ask about cap-exempt filing options during the offer stage
If you miss the H-1B lottery, ask Whoop's HR team whether they've used cap-exempt pathways through nonprofit or university research partnerships. Companies in the science and research sector sometimes have institutional relationships that open alternative filing routes for sponsored engineers.
Verify TN eligibility if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
TN status is available without a lottery and can be obtained at a port of entry for qualifying engineering roles. Confirm with Whoop's immigration team that the Product Engineer job description maps to an eligible TN professional category under the USMCA occupation list before your offer letter is finalized.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Whoop sponsor H-1B visas for Product Engineers?
Yes, Whoop sponsors H-1B visas for Product Engineers. The company has an established pattern of supporting work authorization for engineering roles, including through the H-1B cap season. If you're currently on F-1 OPT, Whoop can typically bridge you through the lottery process, though timing your application relative to the April USCIS filing window matters.
How do I apply for Product Engineer jobs at Whoop?
You can find open Product Engineer positions on Whoop's careers page or through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm your situation is supported before applying. Tailor your application to show cross-functional product experience, particularly work that touches both hardware systems and software features, since that's the profile Whoop's Product Engineering teams hire around.
Which visa types does Whoop commonly use for Product Engineers?
Whoop sponsors H-1B visas as its primary long-term work authorization pathway for Product Engineers. The company also supports F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT for students and recent graduates, and TN visa status for Canadian and Mexican citizens in qualifying engineering categories. If you're early in your authorization timeline, OPT or CPT can get you started while an H-1B petition is prepared.
What qualifications does Whoop look for in Product Engineer candidates?
Whoop's Product Engineering roles sit at the intersection of hardware and software, so the company looks for engineers who can work across firmware, embedded systems, or full-stack product layers depending on the team. A bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field is typically expected, and experience shipping consumer hardware or health and fitness technology strengthens an application considerably.
How do I time my job search around the H-1B filing calendar?
USCIS opens H-1B registration in early March each year, with cap-subject petitions filed by April 1. To align with that window, you'd want an offer letter finalized no later than late February. Starting your Product Engineer job search at Whoop in the fall or winter gives you enough runway to clear interviews, negotiate an offer, and give the legal team time to prepare the petition.
