Tips for Your Contract Nurse RN Job Search
Tailor your resume to each specialty
Highlight the specific unit type, patient ratios, and acuity level for each position you've held. A contract nurse rn resume that spells out ICU drips, vent management, or post-surgical recovery stands out far more than a generic list of clinical duties.
Verify your compact license status early
Contract roles often cross state lines, so confirm whether your RN license is under a Nurse Licensure Compact state before applying. If it isn't, start the endorsement process in your target state well ahead of your preferred start date to avoid delays.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists contract nurse rn openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by unit type not just title
Job titles for contract nurse rn roles vary widely across facilities. Search by unit keywords like PACU, telemetry, or NICU alongside the RN title to surface openings that actually match your clinical background and avoid mismatched applications.
Prepare for a rapid credentialing interview
Many contract facilities conduct a brief clinical screening call before extending an offer. Refresh your recall on unit-specific protocols, your most recent patient census, and any hospital-specific EHR systems you've used, since these come up far more often than behavioral questions.
Negotiate contract terms beyond the base rate
When an offer comes through, ask specifically about housing stipends, travel reimbursement, overtime structure, and whether the contract includes guaranteed hours. These variables often matter more to total take-home pay than the hourly rate alone.
