Tips for Your OT Job Search
Tailor your resume to the setting
Hospitals and SNFs prioritize different competencies, so a single generic resume hurts you in both. Highlight the patient population, documentation systems, and caseload volume that match the specific setting you're targeting, not a one-size-fits-all summary.
List every fieldwork setting you covered
Employers scan for Level II fieldwork placements before they read anything else on a new-grad resume. Name the settings, supervisors' credential types, and the diagnoses you treated. Leaving this vague is the fastest way to get filtered out before a phone screen.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists ot openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by specialty certification when searching
If you hold a CHT, SIPT, or BCPR, search for postings that list those credentials as preferred, not just required. You'll face less competition and appear overqualified in pools where others lack that credential entirely.
Prepare a setting-specific case example for interviews
Interviewers in school-based ot roles ask how you'd handle IEP goal-writing conflicts with teachers. Outpatient hand therapy interviewers probe your splinting rationale. Rehearse one detailed case per setting you're targeting, not a generic clinical story.
Negotiate productivity expectations, not just pay
In ot roles, your daily unit or visit quota shapes burnout risk more than base compensation does. Before accepting an offer, ask the direct supervisor what the expected daily productivity standard is and how it's tracked, then compare across offers.
OT Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most ots?
The companies hiring the most ots right now include CVS Health, Rehab Employee Services, and Ivyrehab Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy & Speech-Language Pathology, Pllc, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Pennsylvania, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. School districts, home health agencies, and large hospital systems consistently represent a high share of active postings.
How many ot jobs are remote?
About 6% of ot openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most professional fields because the role is hands-on by nature. Telehealth ot positions are most common in mental health, early intervention coaching, and home program consultation, where sessions can be conducted effectively over video.
How do you become a ot?
You earn a master's or doctoral degree in occupational therapy from an accredited program, which includes supervised fieldwork rotations across at least two clinical settings. After graduating, you pass the NBCOT certification exam to earn your OTR credential, then apply for licensure in the state where you plan to practice. Each state sets its own licensure requirements, so confirm the specific application steps with your target state's licensing board before you begin the process.
How do you get hired as a ot with little experience?
New-grad ots should lead with their Level II fieldwork placements and the specific patient populations and assessments they worked with, since that experience is the closest equivalent to paid clinical work. Targeting settings that match your fieldwork background improves your fit immediately. Applying to facilities that have formal new-grad mentorship programs or residencies also signals they're willing to invest in developing early-career clinicians rather than expecting full productivity from day one.
What does the ot interview process look like?
Most ot interviews begin with a phone screen focused on your clinical background, licensure status, and setting preferences. This is followed by an in-person or video interview with a director of rehab or lead therapist, which typically includes scenario-based questions about caseload prioritization, documentation, and handling difficult patient or family situations. Some employers, especially schools and pediatric outpatient clinics, ask you to demonstrate a brief assessment or explain your treatment approach for a sample case before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to ot jobs?
You can find and apply to ot jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your specialty, setting preference, and location, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
