Corporate Counsel Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a corporate counsel in Texas?
To become a corporate counsel in Texas, you must earn a Juris Doctor, pass the Texas Bar Examination, and obtain an active license through the State Bar of Texas. After licensure, most in-house corporate counsel roles require several years of practice at a law firm or in a prior in-house position. Specializing early in contracts, compliance, or a Texas-dominant industry such as energy or technology strengthens your candidacy significantly.
How much do corporate counsels make in Texas?
Corporate counsels in Texas earn a median of about $154,200 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,340 for the lowest 10% to over $349,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire corporate counsels in Texas?
Employers hiring corporate counsels in Texas right now include Dallas Independent School District, Dorsey & Whitney LLP, and University of North Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and major energy, technology, and financial services companies means in-house legal teams here tend to be larger and hire more continuously than in most other states.
Which Texas cities have the most corporate counsel jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most corporate counsel openings in Texas. Houston's dominance in energy and petrochemicals drives heavy demand for regulatory and contracts counsel, Dallas attracts financial services and corporate headquarters roles, and Austin's fast-growing technology sector has built a substantial base of in-house legal teams that hire regularly.
Are there remote corporate counsel jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most legal roles. About 13% of corporate counsel openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on drafting, reviewing contracts, and advising over video. Fully remote arrangements are most common for contracts, compliance, and transactional roles where day-to-day court or on-site presence is not required.
How can I get hired as a corporate counsel in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a Texas law firm first, then transitioning in-house after building a specialty. Large Texas employers such as major energy companies and regional bank holding companies hire recent law school graduates into legal rotational programs or junior associate roles that feed into their in-house teams. Clerking for a Texas state or federal judge, earning a State Bar of Texas license immediately after passing the bar, and developing a specialty in contracts or energy regulation all give candidates a concrete edge when applying for first in-house positions.
Where can I find and apply to corporate counsel jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to corporate counsel jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and specialty, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
