Corporate Counsel Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a corporate counsel in New York?
You become a corporate counsel in New York by earning a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school, passing the New York State Bar Examination, and gaining admission through the New York State Board of Law Examiners. Attorneys licensed in other states may qualify through New York's motion on admission process if they meet the experience threshold. Most in-house corporate counsel roles also expect prior experience at a law firm or in a legal department before moving in-house.
How much do corporate counsels make in New York?
Corporate counsels in New York earn a median of about $207,860 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $85,200 for the lowest 10% to over $391,420 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire corporate counsels in New York?
Employers hiring corporate counsels in New York right now include Amazon, Herbert Smith Freehills, and Jobot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of global financial institutions, Fortune 500 headquarters, and major media and pharmaceutical companies makes it one of the deepest in-house legal hiring markets in the country.
Which New York cities have the most corporate counsel jobs?
New York, Bronx, and Buffalo have the most corporate counsel openings in New York. New York City dominates because it is home to the headquarters of major banks, asset managers, media conglomerates, and technology firms, while Albany draws openings tied to state government agencies and regulated utilities, and White Plains reflects the large corporate campuses and healthcare systems in Westchester County.
Are there remote corporate counsel jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many legal roles, since corporate counsel work centers on drafting, review, and advising rather than courtroom appearances. About 20% of corporate counsel openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly in-house legal teams have adopted flexible arrangements. Transactional, compliance, and contract review roles tend to have the most remote availability.
How can I get hired as a corporate counsel in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a summer associate or law clerk position at a New York firm or in-house legal department while still in law school, then transitioning to a junior counsel or associate general counsel role after admission to the New York Bar. Large New York employers in financial services and healthcare regularly recruit new admittees into rotational legal programs. Candidates who add a compliance certification or demonstrate experience in a high-demand area like data privacy or employment law gain a meaningful edge over peers.
