Legal Assistant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a legal assistant in New York?
New York does not require a state-issued license for legal assistants, but employers consistently prefer candidates who hold an associate or bachelor's degree in paralegal studies from an American Bar Association-approved program. Voluntary certification through the National Association of Legal Assistants or the National Federation of Paralegal Associations strengthens a candidate's standing considerably. Many New York firms, particularly those in Manhattan, also look for demonstrated familiarity with New York court e-filing systems and local procedural rules.
How much do legal assistants make in New York?
Legal assistants in New York earn a median of about $68,410 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,330 for the lowest 10% to over $115,720 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire legal assistants in New York?
Employers hiring legal assistants in New York right now include City of New York, Herbert Smith Freehills, and New York University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of AmLaw 100 firms, financial institutions with in-house legal teams, and large government agencies creates consistent year-round demand across a wide range of practice areas.
Which New York cities have the most legal assistant jobs?
New York, Manhattan, and Central Islip have the most legal assistant openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its extraordinary concentration of global law firms, investment banks, and corporate headquarters, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand from regional firms, state government agencies, and courts that require permanent legal support staff.
Are there remote legal assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because legal assistants frequently handle physical filings, notarizations, and in-person court appearances. About 28% of legal assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with flexibility most often offered for document review, contract management, and litigation support roles that don't require courthouse or office presence.
How can I get hired as a legal assistant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for file clerk or legal secretary roles at large New York firms or government offices, then moving into legal assistant work after gaining exposure to case management and court procedures. The Legal Aid Society and New York City's Law Department regularly bring on entry-level candidates, and completing an internship through an ABA-approved paralegal program at a school like Fordham or Pace University adds the credential that gets a resume past initial screening.
Where can I find and apply to legal assistant jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to legal assistant jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York City, Buffalo, Albany, and surrounding areas. Find roles that match your experience and practice area interest, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
