Get Access To All JobsBrand Marketing CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Brand Marketing internship qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the role is an integral part of your curriculum, meaning your academic program includes coursework directly related to brand strategy, marketing communications, or consumer research. Your DSO makes the final determination. Roles focused primarily on sales support or general administrative work may not meet the academic nexus requirement, even if the employer calls the position a marketing internship.
Can I do CPT in Brand Marketing while taking classes full-time?
Yes. F-1 students can work CPT part-time (under 20 hours per week) while enrolled full-time. Some programs allow full-time CPT during a dedicated internship semester, but you must remain enrolled in at least one credit-bearing course tied to the work experience. Confirm your school's specific enrollment requirement with your DSO before accepting an offer.
How do I find Brand Marketing employers who are comfortable with CPT students?
Employers with prior experience hiring F-1 students on CPT are significantly easier to work with than those encountering it for the first time. Migrate Mate lets you browse Brand Marketing roles filtered by employers with documented work authorization filing history, so you can prioritize companies that already understand the authorization process and won't withdraw an offer over paperwork confusion.
Does CPT for Brand Marketing count against my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, no matter how many semesters you use it, does not affect OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT (20 or more hours per week) is the risk: if you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your degree program, you lose all OPT eligibility. Many Brand Marketing co-ops are structured as full-time, so track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully.
What happens if my Brand Marketing employer wants me to start before my CPT is authorized?
Working before your DSO issues the CPT authorization on your I-20 is a status violation, regardless of what the employer says or promises in writing. Your CPT start date cannot precede the authorized start date on your updated I-20. If the employer needs an earlier start, ask your DSO whether expedited processing is possible, do not begin work on an unofficial verbal agreement.
