Can I work as a Business Development Director on CPT while still enrolled?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your degree program and your DSO authorizes it on a new or updated I-20 before your start date. Director-level roles qualify when your program has documented learning outcomes tied to strategic sales, partnership management, or market development. Full-time CPT of 12 months or more uses up your OPT eligibility, so discuss the duration with your DSO before accepting.
Does a Business Development Director role qualify for CPT given its seniority level?
Seniority alone doesn't disqualify a role. What matters is whether the work aligns with your curriculum. Many graduate business, MBA, and international management programs explicitly include executive or director-level practicum requirements. Your DSO evaluates the job description against your program's learning outcomes, not the title, so a well-documented offer letter describing the scope of work is what drives the authorization decision.
How do I find Business Development Director roles that are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Business Development Director openings filtered by employers with work authorization filing history. Many director-level positions at growth-stage companies and mid-market firms are open to CPT candidates, particularly in B2B technology, consulting, and professional services. Targeting employers who have previously filed Labor Condition Applications for similar roles shortens the vetting process significantly.
What documents does my employer need from me to hire me on CPT?
Your employer needs your valid I-20 with CPT authorization listed on page two, showing the correct employer name, start date, and end date. They'll also need your I-94 arrival record confirming your current F-1 status. Some employers also request your most recent visa stamp for their records, though it isn't legally required for employment verification as long as your I-20 and I-94 are current.
What happens to my work authorization if the Business Development Director role changes scope mid-CPT?
If your duties change materially, such as shifting from a domestic to an international portfolio or moving from individual contributor work to managing a team, your DSO may need to issue a new I-20 reflecting the updated authorization. Notify your DSO promptly if the role expands beyond what the original CPT approval described. Working outside the authorized scope jeopardizes your F-1 status, so get any changes documented before they take effect.
