Does a Parts Clerk role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on your degree program. Parts Clerk work can qualify for CPT if your DSO confirms the role is an integral part of your curriculum, typically for students in supply chain management, automotive technology, operations, or business logistics programs. The O*NET profile for Parts Clerks documents the core competencies your DSO will evaluate against your coursework.
Can I work as a Parts Clerk at a car dealership on CPT?
Yes. Automotive dealerships are among the most common employers for Parts Clerk CPT placements, particularly for students in automotive technology or supply chain programs. Confirm the dealership is enrolled in E-Verify and that your I-20 lists the employer by name and location before your start date. Many dealerships have no prior experience hiring F-1 students, so proactively explain the CPT process to HR.
How do I find Parts Clerk employers open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Parts Clerk roles from employers with documented work authorization history, making it easier to identify which companies are open to F-1 CPT students. Distributors, manufacturers, and dealerships in logistics-heavy regions tend to be the most receptive, especially if they've hired international students before. Targeting employers already using E-Verify streamlines the onboarding process significantly.
Will working full-time as a Parts Clerk on CPT affect my OPT?
Full-time CPT authorized for 12 months or more makes you ineligible for OPT after graduation. If your Parts Clerk placement runs across multiple semesters, coordinate with your DSO to structure it as part-time CPT whenever possible during the academic year. Reserve full-time CPT for summer or breaks if OPT eligibility is important to your post-graduation plan.
What documents do I need before starting a Parts Clerk CPT job?
You need an updated I-20 with CPT authorization showing the correct employer name, work location, and authorized dates. Your DSO issues this only after approving the role, so don't accept a verbal offer as clearance to start. Bring your updated I-20, your current I-20, and your valid F-1 visa to HR on day one. USCIS requires CPT to be authorized before work begins, not retroactively.
