Get Access To All JobsSchool Bus Driver CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a School Bus Driver role qualify for CPT as an F-1 student?
CPT eligibility depends on your specific degree program, not just the job title. A transportation management, logistics, or public administration program can support a School Bus Driver CPT authorization if your DSO and academic advisor confirm the work is an integral part of your curriculum. A standalone driving job with no curricular connection will not qualify.
Do school districts typically hire F-1 students on CPT?
Some public school districts and private student transportation contractors do hire F-1 CPT students, especially in regions with driver shortages. The key variable is whether the employer's HR team understands CPT authorization. Districts enrolled in E-Verify and experienced with work-authorized non-citizens are your strongest targets. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with relevant hiring history so you can focus your search there.
Is a CDL required for CPT to be approved for this role?
Your DSO can authorize CPT before you hold a CDL, but no employer will let you operate a school bus without a valid Class B CDL and School Bus endorsement. Some districts allow you to train and obtain licensure as part of the position, which can support a CPT authorization tied to a transportation training program. Confirm the licensing timeline with both your DSO and the employer.
Can I work full-time as a School Bus Driver on CPT?
Full-time CPT is permissible under F-1 regulations, but any single period of full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more permanently eliminates your OPT eligibility. School bus routes often run part-time hours tied to school schedules, which may naturally keep your authorization in the part-time category. Verify actual weekly hours with the employer before your DSO files the CPT authorization.
What documentation does the employer need from me as an F-1 CPT student?
You'll need to provide your current I-20 with CPT authorization printed on page two, your F-1 visa stamp, your I-94 arrival record, and your passport. The employer will use these to complete Form I-9 and, if E-Verify enrolled, run your authorization electronically. Bring originals on your first day since photocopies are not acceptable for I-9 purposes.
