Cybersecurity Consultant Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cybersecurity consultant in Texas?
Texas does not issue a state license for cybersecurity consultants, so the path runs through education and industry credentials. Most employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, computer science, or information systems, plus a recognized certification such as CISSP, CISM, or CompTIA Security+. Texas's large defense and energy sectors also value compliance-specific credentials like CMMC or CISA. Building hands-on experience through internal IT roles, helpdesk work, or internships at Texas technology firms is the most common starting point.
How much do cybersecurity consultants make in Texas?
Cybersecurity consultants in Texas earn a median of about $129,890 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,990 for the lowest 10% to over $178,550 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cybersecurity consultants in Texas?
Employers hiring cybersecurity consultants in Texas right now include Boston Consulting, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Protiviti, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of financial institutions in Dallas, energy firms in Houston, and federal contractors in the San Antonio and Austin corridors means demand is spread across multiple large-employer categories rather than any single industry.
Which Texas cities have the most cybersecurity consultant jobs?
Dallas, Austin, and Houston account for the greatest share of cybersecurity consultant openings in Texas. Dallas draws heavily from financial services and corporate headquarters, Houston from energy and healthcare systems, and Austin from its fast-growing technology sector, while San Antonio benefits from a dense cluster of military installations and federal contractors that consistently require cleared and compliance-oriented security consultants.
Are there remote cybersecurity consultant jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. Cybersecurity consulting is largely analytical and communication-driven, making it well suited to remote delivery. About 32% of cybersecurity consultant openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly distributed the client base is. Roles centered on cloud security, compliance advisory, and risk assessments tend to be the most consistently available in fully remote formats.
How can I get hired as a cybersecurity consultant in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into cybersecurity from an adjacent IT role such as network administrator, systems analyst, or helpdesk technician, all of which are common in Texas's large hospital networks, municipal governments, and energy companies. Texas employers like USAA in San Antonio and major Dallas-area financial firms run rotational technology programs and associate consultant tracks that accept candidates with foundational credentials. Earning a CompTIA Security+ or pursuing a Texas university cybersecurity certificate strengthens an application considerably, as does completing a capture-the-flag competition or building a home lab portfolio.
Where can I find and apply to cybersecurity consultant jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to cybersecurity consultant jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Search the listings on this page, find roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
