Data Science Manager Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data science manager in Maryland?
The most common path into a data science manager role in Maryland is progressing from a senior data scientist or analytics lead position after demonstrating project ownership and team coordination. Maryland has no state-issued license for this role, but employers in the defense and federal contracting sectors frequently require candidates to be clearance-eligible. Hiring managers typically expect a graduate degree in a quantitative discipline combined with experience managing cross-functional analytical teams.
Which companies hire data science managers in Maryland?
Maryland data science manager roles are posted by Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and RealmOne and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Maryland's concentration of federal agencies, defense contractors, and large health systems makes it one of the more consistently active states for this level of role.
Which Maryland cities have the most data science manager jobs?
Baltimore, Laurel, and Columbia account for the largest share of data science manager openings in Maryland. The DC Metro corridor drives demand through federal agencies and defense contractors headquartered in and around Bethesda and Rockville, while Baltimore's cluster of major health systems, universities, and financial services firms sustains a separate and significant hiring market.
Are there remote data science manager jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields, since data science management is primarily a desk-based, analytical, and collaborative role that translates well to distributed work. About 89% of data science manager openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, though defense and government-adjacent roles often require on-site presence due to clearance or classified system requirements. Strategic leadership and model oversight responsibilities are the functions most commonly performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a data science manager in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is moving from a senior individual contributor role into a lead or player-coach position at a Maryland employer before stepping into a full management title. Large health systems like Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland Medical System, as well as federal contractors including Leidos and SAIC, regularly hire analytics leads who take on direct reports over time. Building a portfolio of end-to-end project delivery and completing a graduate program in data science or applied statistics significantly strengthens a candidacy for early management roles in this market.
Where can I find and apply to data science manager jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to data science manager jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings in the state. Search the roles available, find the ones that match your background and target level, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
