Dental Hygienist Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dental hygienist in New Jersey?
To become a dental hygienist in New Jersey, you must earn an associate or bachelor's degree in dental hygiene from an accredited program, pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination, and pass a regional or state clinical examination. You then apply for licensure through the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry, which issues the active license required to practice. New Jersey also requires continuing education for license renewal.
How much do dental hygienists make in New Jersey?
Dental hygienists in New Jersey earn a median of about $107,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $94,260 for the lowest 10% to over $117,730 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire dental hygienists in New Jersey?
Employers hiring dental hygienists in New Jersey right now include ProSmile, The Smilist Dental, and Dental Care Alliance, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New Jersey's dense suburban population and large network of community health centers mean both private group practices and regional health systems maintain steady hiring throughout the year.
Which New Jersey cities have the most dental hygienist jobs?
The cities with the most dental hygienist openings in New Jersey are Freehold, Lakewood, and Toms River. The distribution reflects New Jersey's population density and its concentration of large group dental practices and health system-affiliated clinics in major urban and suburban corridors, while smaller markets often see openings tied to community health centers serving underserved populations.
Are there remote dental hygienist jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're rare. Dental hygiene is a hands-on clinical role performed chairside, so most positions require on-site presence. About 0% of dental hygienist openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those typically involve administrative, case coordination, or dental public health consulting functions rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a dental hygienist in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate positions at large group practices and Federally Qualified Health Centers across New Jersey, which regularly onboard new graduates and provide structured clinical mentorship. Atlantic Health System and RWJBarnabas Health both operate dental or oral health programs that hire entry-level hygienists. Completing your New Jersey licensure promptly and gaining clinical hours through your program's externship in a New Jersey practice gives candidates a meaningful edge in competitive markets like Newark and Trenton.
Where can I find and apply to dental hygienist jobs in New Jersey?
