Deputy Attorney General Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a deputy attorney general in Virginia?
You become a deputy attorney general in Virginia by earning a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and gaining admission to the Virginia State Bar through the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners, which requires passing the Uniform Bar Exam administered in Virginia. Most positions in the Virginia Office of the Attorney General also expect several years of litigation experience in a relevant specialty, such as criminal appeals, Medicaid fraud, or environmental enforcement, before candidates are competitive for appointment.
Which companies hire deputy attorney generals in Virginia?
Companies currently hiring deputy attorney generals in Virginia include M.C. Dean, Cayuse Holdings, and Peraton, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Virginia's combination of state agency headquarters in Richmond and the dense concentration of defense contractors and federally regulated industries in Northern Virginia makes it one of the more active states for government and corporate legal counsel roles.
Which Virginia cities have the most deputy attorney general jobs?
Arlington, Alexandria, and Quantico account for the most deputy attorney general openings in Virginia. Richmond dominates because it is the seat of state government and home to the Virginia Office of the Attorney General, while Northern Virginia and Arlington draw demand from the many federal agencies, defense contractors, and regulated utilities headquartered or operating there.
Are there remote deputy attorney general jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. Deputy attorney general work is largely courtroom- and agency-based, which limits remote options significantly. About 32% of deputy attorney general openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to involve legal research, brief writing, or advisory work rather than active litigation or in-person hearings.
How can I get hired as a deputy attorney general in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a clerkship with a Virginia circuit court or the Virginia Court of Appeals followed by a junior attorney position in the Virginia Office of the Attorney General, which recruits recent law graduates into entry-level assistant attorney general roles across divisions including Medicaid fraud, consumer protection, and criminal appellate. Lateral moves from public defender offices, commonwealth's attorney offices, or Virginia regulatory agencies also open the door, and candidates who already hold active Virginia State Bar membership have a clear edge over those still awaiting bar results.
Where can I find and apply to deputy attorney general jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to deputy attorney general jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across state agencies, regulated industries, and private employers. Find the roles that fit your experience and apply directly to each one.
