INTRODUCTION
Reimagine the infrastructure of cancer care within a community that values integrity, inspires growth, and is uniquely positioned to create a more modern, connected oncology ecosystem. We’re looking for a Design Manager, Design Systems to help us accomplish our mission to improve and extend lives by learning from the experience of every person with cancer. Are you ready to be the next changemaker in cancer care?
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
You'll lead our Design Systems team and help define how Flatiron products look, feel, and function across every surface. As a player-coach, you'll split your time between managing and growing a team and contributing hands-on to the system itself. Your team's work enables product teams to rapidly prototype new ideas and ship high-quality, accessible, and consistent user-facing applications. You will serve as a connector between design and engineering, championing scalable front-end practices and AI tooling that make every designer and engineer at Flatiron more effective. In addition, you'll:
- Manage and mentor a team of 3–4 designers and design technologists, developing their technical skills, systems thinking, and ability to prioritize and deliver high-impact work
- Define and drive the roadmap for Atrium, Flatiron's design system, including component governance, breaking change management, and adoption across product teams
- Contribute directly to Atrium through code, documentation, and design, modeling the craft standards you set for your team
- Build and sustain cross-functional partnerships with engineering and product management to align on front-end standards, scalable UI patterns, and contribution models
- Communicate and prioritize design systems work based on org-wide impact, translating complex systems problems into a clear, sequenced backlog that stakeholders understand and trust
- At the end of your first year, success would mean Atrium is measurably adopted across core product surfaces, your team has a clear and trusted contribution model with partner engineering teams, and each direct report has grown meaningfully in their scope and ownership
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
You're a kind, passionate, and collaborative problem-solver who values the opportunity to think beyond the way things are. In addition, you're a systems thinker and hands-on leader with 6–9 years of experience in design systems or front-end development, including at least 1–2 years managing or mentoring others.
- You have led or significantly shaped a mature design system, including governance, documentation, contribution models, and breaking change processes
- You have managed or mentored 2–4 designers or technologists, with a track record of developing others' technical and strategic thinking
- Deep fluency in both design tooling (Figma, shared libraries, tokens) and front-end code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React), with the ability to contribute meaningfully in both
- You are a skilled communicator who can translate design systems strategy for engineering stakeholders and front-end constraints for design stakeholders, building trust and alignment across both
- You are experienced working in health tech, enterprise software, or other complex product environments where consistency, accessibility, and reliability are non-negotiable
- You are familiar with AI-assisted design and development workflows — such as code generation or design-to-code tooling — and thoughtful about where they create real leverage for a systems team
WHERE YOU’LL WORK
In this hybrid role, you’ll have a defined work location that includes work from home and 3 office days set by you and your team. For more information on our approach to hybrid work, please visit the how we work website.

Design Manager Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a design manager in New York?
Design manager roles in New York do not require a state-issued license or registration. The typical path starts with a design degree from an accredited program, followed by several years as an individual contributor in a specialty such as UX, brand, or product design. New York employers strongly weight portfolio quality and cross-functional leadership experience, so candidates who have led projects, mentored junior designers, and presented work to senior stakeholders inside a New York-caliber agency or tech company move into management roles fastest.
How much do design managers make in New York?
Design managers in New York earn a median of about $137,320 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,060 for the lowest 10% to over $280,320 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire design managers in New York?
Employers hiring design managers in New York right now include Colliers Engineering & Design, Ralph Lauren, and Anthropic, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of major fashion houses, global advertising agencies, financial technology companies, and media groups means design management openings appear across a broader range of industries here than in most other markets.
Which New York cities have the most design manager jobs?
The cities with the most design manager openings in New York are New York, Albany, and Rochester. The distribution reflects New York City's dominance as the national center for fashion, media, advertising, and tech product companies, while secondary markets like White Plains and Long Island City carry demand from corporate headquarters and regional offices that maintain in-house design teams.
Are there remote design manager jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many management roles, since design workflows are well-suited to remote collaboration tools. About 43% of design manager openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly the industry adopted flexible arrangements. The work that stays most remote is UX and product design leadership, while brand, environmental, and retail design management roles tend to require more in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a design manager in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from a senior individual contributor role, such as senior UX designer, senior brand designer, or art director, into a lead or principal designer title at a mid-size New York agency or product company, then stepping into formal management. Large New York employers in fashion and media regularly hire design program coordinators or associate creative directors as a bridge role. A strong portfolio demonstrating mentorship, design systems ownership, or cross-functional project leadership gives candidates without a management title a concrete edge.
Where can I find and apply to design manager jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to design manager jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and specialty, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
