Adjunct Professor roles at U.S. universities qualify as E-3 specialty occupations when tied to a specific academic discipline requiring a bachelor's degree or higher. Australian nationals can secure E-3 sponsorship without competing in a lottery, with two-year terms that renew indefinitely as long as you hold a qualifying teaching appointment.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as an Adjunct Professor
Verify your credential equivalency early
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 purposes, but have your transcripts evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluator before applying so your employer's HR team doesn't stall the LCA filing.
Target departments with active LCA history
Search the DOL's OFLC disclosure data for universities that have previously filed Labor Condition Applications under your academic discipline's SOC code. Departments with prior E-3 or H-1B LCA filings already understand the process and are far less likely to withdraw an offer over sponsorship concerns.
Clarify appointment type before offer letters are drafted
Adjunct contracts are often semester-by-semester, which can complicate E-3 renewals if employment continuity isn't documented. Ask the department coordinator to specify a full academic year or multi-semester appointment in your offer letter so your E-3 petition reflects stable, ongoing employment.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA step
The LCA must be DOL-certified before your consulate appointment, and errors in the wage level or SOC classification are common for adjunct roles. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so nothing delays your teaching start date.
Prepare a specialty occupation argument for your discipline
Consular officers can question whether an adjunct position genuinely requires a specific degree. Bring your course syllabus, the department's formal job posting language, and your Australian transcript to demonstrate that your role demands specialized theoretical knowledge, not just general teaching ability.
Time your consulate appointment around semester deadlines
E-3 visa appointments at Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth can run two to six weeks out. File your DS-160 and book your appointment at least eight weeks before your intended U.S. start date to account for administrative processing and avoid missing your first teaching term.

Find Adjunct Professor JobsAdjunct Professor E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Adjunct Professor jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Most university job postings don't explicitly advertise E-3 sponsorship, so filtering by visa type is rarely an option on general boards. Migrate Mate surfaces adjunct and faculty roles from employers with active E-3 and H-1B LCA filing history, so you can focus on departments that already understand work visa sponsorship rather than cold-educating every hiring manager you contact.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does the adjunct role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, if the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific academic field and the courses you teach are tied to that discipline. A role teaching introductory general education courses across multiple unrelated subjects is harder to qualify than a discipline-specific appointment in engineering, nursing, or data science. Your offer letter and course assignment documentation both matter at the consulate.
How does the E-3 compare to H-1B for Adjunct Professor positions?
The E-3 has a 10,500 annual cap that has never been exhausted, meaning no lottery and no April registration window. H-1B requires cap registration in March with roughly a one-in-four selection chance. For Australian academics, the E-3 lets you apply directly after receiving an offer at any time of year, with a consulate appointment typically faster than USCIS H-1B adjudication.
Can I teach at multiple colleges on a single E-3 visa?
Each E-3 visa is tied to a specific employer and LCA. If you want to teach at two institutions simultaneously, each employer must file a separate LCA and you'll need separate E-3 approval for each appointment. Concurrent E-3 petitions are permitted, but both positions must independently qualify as specialty occupations with their own prevailing wage certifications from DOL.
