Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as an Application Engineer
Verify your degree matches the role
E-3 visa sponsorship requires the job to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning your engineering or technical degree must directly align with the Application Engineer duties. A general business or unrelated science degree won't satisfy this requirement.
Target employers with active LCA history
Search DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data to identify companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for Application Engineer or similar technical roles. Employers with prior LCA filings already understand the E-3 process.
Request the offer letter before your consulate appointment
Your consular officer will ask for a certified LCA and a detailed offer letter specifying your role, salary, and work location. Get both documents from your employer before scheduling your appointment at a U.S. consulate in Australia.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the paperwork
Once you have a job offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end. This avoids the coordination errors that delay consulate appointments when employers file LCAs without prior E-3 experience.
Address third-party worksite arrangements upfront
Application Engineers frequently work on client sites, not the sponsoring employer's premises. Clarify with your employer which entity controls your day-to-day work, as USCIS scrutinises employer-employee relationships in consulting or deployment arrangements.
Prepare Australian credential equivalency documentation
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree, but have your employer confirm this with their legal team before the LCA is filed. Inconsistent documentation at the consulate causes unnecessary delays.
E-3 Visa Application Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Application Engineer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find Application Engineer roles where employers are prepared to sponsor the E-3 visa. Standard job boards mix together visa-sponsor-ready roles with those that aren't, making it hard to identify which employers understand the LCA process. Migrate Mate filters specifically for E-3-eligible opportunities, saving you time spent on applications that go nowhere.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does the E-3 visa or H-1B work better for Application Engineer roles?
For Australian nationals, the E-3 is significantly more practical for Application Engineer positions. The H-1B visa requires winning a lottery with roughly a 25 percent selection rate, while the E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap. Both require the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, but the E-3 can be processed directly at a U.S. consulate in Australia without USCIS adjudication, which shortens the timeline considerably.
Can I switch employers after starting on an E-3 as an Application Engineer?
Yes, but the new employer must file a fresh LCA with the DOL and you'll need a new visa stamp if you travel outside the U.S. There's no portability provision equivalent to H-1B's AC21 rule. You can begin working for the new employer once their LCA is certified and the updated visa documentation is in order, but plan for a consulate visit at your next international trip.
Does an Application Engineer role at a staffing firm qualify for E-3 sponsorship?
It can, but staffing and consulting arrangements receive additional scrutiny because USCIS and consular officers assess whether a bona fide employer-employee relationship exists. The staffing firm sponsoring your E-3 must demonstrate it controls your work assignments, not the end client. Roles where the end client directs all daily tasks may require the client to be the petitioner instead.
