E-3 Visa Backend Engineer Jobs
Backend Engineer roles qualify as E-3 specialty occupations when the position requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Australian nationals can secure E-3 visa sponsorship without competing in the H-1B lottery, and the visa renews in two-year increments for as long as you hold a qualifying role.

Imagine what you could do here! The people here at Apple don’t just create products - they build the kind of wonder that’s revolutionized entire industries. It’s the diversity of those people and their ideas that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do, from amazing technology to industry-leading environmental efforts. At Apple, inclusion is a shared responsibility, and we work together to foster a culture where everyone belongs and is inspired to do their best work!
We’re a diverse collective of thinkers and doers, continuously reimagining our products and practices to help people do what they love in new ways. That innovation is inspired by a shared commitment to great work - and to each other. Because learning from the people here means we’re learning from the best. Retail Operations creates the tools and programs that empower our teams to provide a one of a kind, only at Apple experience. We do this by obsessing over the employee and customer experience, and driving a global strategy that sets the bar.
The Retail Technology Engineering team designs, develops and deploys apps and digital experiences that shape the future of Apple Retail stores globally. You'll be a part of a dynamic team of full stack engineers, who work in partnership with various cross-functional Apple teams, to deliver innovative, scalable solutions to tens of thousands of Apple devices across 500+ stores worldwide. If you're self-motivated, passionate about building impactful products and mastering new technologies, this is your opportunity to thrive.
Description
As a Senior Backend Engineer on this team, you’ll design and evolve the services that deliver those experiences across a global fleet. Our services must be ready on a cadence set by Apple’s product launches rather than by sprint planning. This is a backend role with close ties to our products: the decisions you make in code show up as soon as customers enter the store. At this level, you’re the engineer others turn to when a tradeoff isn’t obvious, when a system needs to evolve faster than it can be rewritten, or when a choice made today shapes what’s possible two launches from now. You’ll set the technical bar across our services, mentor the engineers around you, and own outcomes end-to-end with product, design, and the teams running the stores themselves. What you build reaches millions of customers in our stores each year. It shapes how they experience Apple’s products and helps inform their choices.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend systems for Retail Operations
- Take ownership of service reliability and performance in production, including readiness for retail launches
- Lead technical projects, providing guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
- Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code across our stack (Python, Go, and Ruby)
- Optimize database performance and ensure data integrity in PostgreSQL and our data warehouse
- Present technical proposals and solutions to senior management and stakeholders
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including designers, frontend engineers, native app developers, and product owners, to deliver high-quality products
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving our development processes
- Drive innovation by identifying new opportunities to improve our systems and processes
- Communicate team roadmap, performance, and risks clearly to Senior Leaders and Executive Stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in backend software development
- Proven ability to design, develop, and deploy scalable and resilient backend systems
- Excellent knowledge of data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and software engineering principles
- Experience in leading technical projects and mentoring junior engineers
- Strong proficiency in at least one of Python, Go, or Ruby, with a willingness to work across all three
- Extensive experience with database technologies, particularly PostgreSQL
- Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts and experience with a major warehouse platform
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies like Kubernetes
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to influence cross-functional leaders and cross-functional stakeholders
- Experience operating distributed systems in production environments with strict availability requirements
- Experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS
- Experience with Snowflake
- Excellent communication skills, including experience presenting technical work to senior management and non-technical audiences

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Backend Engineer
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
USCIS evaluates whether your specific degree field matches the Backend Engineer role. A computer science or software engineering degree is the cleanest fit. If yours is in a different field, document how your coursework maps to the technical requirements of the position.
Target employers with active DOL LCA filings
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data for companies that have filed LCAs for backend or software engineering roles. Employers already familiar with the LCA process move faster and are less likely to withdraw offers due to paperwork uncertainty.
Clarify sponsorship scope before accepting an offer
Some employers will cover the E-3 visa LCA filing but expect you to fund the consular visa fee yourself. Confirm in writing which costs each party covers before you sign, so there are no surprises when the government fees come due.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for end-to-end support
Once you have an offer, Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles the LCA submission with DOL, prepares your visa paperwork, and guides you through the consulate appointment in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth, reducing the risk of documentation errors that delay your start date.
Convert contractor roles into E-3 eligible positions
Some backend roles are initially posted as contractor or freelance arrangements, which don't meet the E-3 employer-employee relationship requirement. Ask the hiring team whether the role can be structured as direct employment before you invest time in interviews.
Prepare for E-Verify enrollment requirements
Federal contractors and companies above certain size thresholds must enroll in E-Verify when hiring E-3 workers. Confirm your prospective employer is enrolled or willing to enroll before the LCA is filed, since unenrolled employers can't complete the I-9 process legally.
E-3 Visa Backend Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Backend Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. You can filter by job title, location, and employer type to surface companies that have a demonstrated history of hiring on the E-3. General job platforms don't surface sponsorship intent reliably, so a targeted search saves significant time.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Backend Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field such as computer science or software engineering. If the job description lists the degree as preferred rather than required, USCIS may not classify it as a specialty occupation. Ask the employer to revise the job description before the LCA is filed to avoid a Request for Evidence later.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Backend Engineers?
The E-3 has no annual lottery and no numerical cap that affects availability. For Australian Backend Engineers, this means you can apply and start as soon as an employer files the LCA and you clear your consulate interview, rather than waiting up to a year for an October 1 start date under the H-1B cap. The trade-off is exclusivity: only Australian nationals qualify.
Can I switch employers or change projects while on an E-3 as a Backend Engineer?
You can change employers, but each new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL before you start work. Moving to a different team within the same company is generally fine without a new filing, unless your job duties change substantially. You can begin work with a new employer as soon as the LCA is certified, without waiting for a new visa stamp if your current E-3 is still valid.
