Align your degree to the role
Your E-3 visa application depends on a direct tie between your Australian degree and the Applications Specialist position. A degree in information systems, computer science, or engineering typically supports the specialty occupation requirement. A general business degree without technical coursework often doesn't.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data to find companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for Applications Specialist or similar software roles. These employers already understand the E-3 process and won't need convincing it's feasible.
Get your credentials assessed before applying
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 purposes, but some employers will ask for written confirmation. A credential evaluation from a NACES-approved body gives your employer documentation to rely on during the LCA stage.
Clarify sponsorship early in the interview process
Raise E-3 sponsorship before the offer stage, not after. Explain that you're an Australian citizen, that the E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap, and that the employer's main obligation is filing a Labor Condition Application with the DOL. Most rejections come from misunderstood cost assumptions.
File your LCA before booking your consulate appointment
The DOL must certify your Labor Condition Application before you can submit a visa application at the U.S. consulate in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth. DOL LCA certification typically takes seven business days. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so nothing is submitted out of order.
Prepare for specialty occupation questions at the consulate
Consular officers assess whether your Applications Specialist role genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Bring your offer letter, employer's job description, and your degree transcripts. Be ready to explain how your daily responsibilities require specialized technical knowledge, not general software troubleshooting.
E-3 Visa Applications Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Applications Specialist jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for Applications Specialist roles where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, so you end up cold-applying and discovering the employer won't sponsor late in the process. Migrate Mate surfaces roles with sponsorship context so you're targeting the right companies from the start.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an Applications Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It depends on how the role is defined. Applications Specialist positions that require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related technical field qualify under the E-3 specialty occupation standard. Roles framed as general IT support or helpdesk work, where any degree satisfies the requirement, are harder to qualify. The job description your employer provides to the DOL for the LCA filing is the document that matters most.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Applications Specialist roles?
The E-3 is significantly more practical for Australian applicants in this role. There's no lottery, no annual cap, and no waiting period tied to a fiscal year. You can apply at a U.S. consulate in Australia as soon as your employer's LCA is certified by the DOL, which typically takes about seven business days. The H-1B visa requires entering a lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate and waiting until October 1 of the following year to start work.
Can I change employers while on an E-3 as an Applications Specialist?
Yes, but you need a new E-3 for the new employer. The visa is employer-specific, so your current E-3 doesn't transfer. Your new employer files a fresh LCA with the DOL, and once it's certified you return to a U.S. consulate in Australia for a new visa stamp. There's no portability rule like the one that exists for H-1B holders, so plan the transition timeline around consulate appointment availability.
