Verify your credential equivalency before applying
Australian Certificate III or IV in Health Services Assistance may not satisfy the E-3 visa specialty occupation requirement on its own. Get a credential evaluation confirming your qualification is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's-level standard before approaching employers.
Target employers with established LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data for certified LCA filings under the Medical Assistant SOC code. Employers with prior filings already understand the sponsorship process and are far less likely to withdraw an offer mid-application.
Flag E-3 eligibility early in recruiter conversations
Many U.S. healthcare recruiters assume Australian applicants need H-1B visa sponsorship and assume that means a lottery. Clarifying upfront that the E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery removes a common objection before it stalls your application.
Use Migrate Mate to match with sponsoring employers
Certified Medical Assistant roles with active E-3 sponsorship aren't consistently flagged on general job boards. Migrate Mate surfaces roles from employers already set up to sponsor E-3 visas, reducing the time you spend filtering out non-viable listings.
Confirm your employer files an LCA before accepting
The LCA must be certified by the DOL before your visa application can proceed. Once you have a verbal offer, ask the hiring manager directly whether they've filed an LCA before or if they'll be using Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to manage the process.
Prepare your specialty occupation documentation in advance
E-3 consular officers occasionally scrutinize whether CMA roles genuinely require a degree. Have your job offer letter, credential evaluation, and a brief written explanation of how your Australian qualification maps to the specialty occupation standard ready before your interview.
E-3 Visa Certified Medical Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Certified Medical Assistant jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point. It filters roles by employers already prepared to sponsor E-3 visas, which saves you from chasing listings where sponsorship isn't on offer. Standard job boards rarely flag E-3 sponsorship separately, so most Australian CMAs waste time on roles that won't proceed past the interview stage.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Certified Medical Assistant role qualify as a specialty occupation under the E-3?
It can, but the role description matters significantly. A CMA position that requires a relevant degree in health sciences or a formally evaluated equivalent will generally satisfy the specialty occupation standard. Roles where the employer lists a degree as preferred rather than required are more likely to face scrutiny at the consulate. Ask the hiring manager to confirm the degree requirement is listed as mandatory in the official job description before you proceed.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Certified Medical Assistant roles in the U.S.?
The E-3 is substantially more practical for Australian CMAs. The H-1B is subject to an annual lottery with a selection rate well below 50%, meaning most applicants are rejected before the visa is even reviewed. The E-3 has no cap, no lottery, and no randomness. If your employer files the LCA and your qualifications hold up at the consulate, approval follows from eligibility, not luck.
Can I switch CMA employers after arriving in the U.S. on an E-3?
Yes, but you can't simply transfer your E-3 to the new employer. Each new employer must file a fresh LCA with the DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa reflecting the updated role and employer. If you're changing employers while already in the U.S., you can begin work for the new employer once the new LCA is certified and a new visa is issued, either through consular processing or a border crossing.
