Verify your NCLEX and state license first
U.S. employers require active state RN licensure before they can file your LCA. If you hold a three-year Australian nursing degree, get a credential evaluation confirming U.S. equivalency before applying so employers don't stall on this step.
Target health systems with existing E-3 history
Hospital networks that have previously sponsored Australian nurses understand the LCA filing process. Search DOL's FLAG portal for Labor Condition Applications filed under nursing SOC codes to identify which employers have recent E-3 visa filing history.
Use Migrate Mate to streamline your filing
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end, from DOL certification through consulate appointment preparation, so neither you nor your employer misses a deadline.
Address dual intent directly in your interview
E-3 is a nonimmigrant visa, so consular officers will ask about your intent to return to Australia. Prepare a clear, honest answer about your ties at home and your plan for E-3 renewals rather than leaving the officer to draw their own conclusion.
Confirm specialty occupation framing with your employer
Your job offer must describe the RN role as requiring at least a bachelor's degree in nursing specifically, not just any health sciences degree. Ask your employer to confirm this language in the job description before they file the LCA with DOL.
Time your CGFNS credentialing before the offer stage
Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) certification is required by most states for international nursing graduates. Starting this process before you have a firm offer means your credentials are ready when the employer needs to file.
E-3 Visa Clinical Registered Nurse: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Clinical Registered Nurse jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship, including clinical nursing positions. Listings are filtered for employers who have E-3 filing history, so you're not spending time on roles where the employer has never sponsored an Australian nurse before.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Clinical Registered Nurse role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Roles at major hospital networks and health systems routinely meet this standard. General aide or LPN roles that don't require a BSN do not qualify. Your employer's job description must explicitly state the BSN requirement for the DOL to certify the LCA.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian nurses?
The E-3 is significantly more accessible for Australian nurses than the H-1B visa. There is no annual lottery, no cap backlog, and the visa renews in two-year increments indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying nursing role. H-1B selection is lottery-based with no guarantee of a slot, making long-term career planning difficult. For Australians, the E-3 is the practical first choice.
Can I change hospitals or states while on an E-3 nursing visa?
Yes, but each new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp if you travel internationally before starting. Changing states may also require a new state RN license, which can take several months. Plan your transition timeline around both the employer filing and any licensing requirements in the destination state.
