E-3 Visa Internal Medicine Physician Jobs
Internal Medicine Physician roles qualify as E-3 specialty occupations, and U.S. hospitals and health systems regularly provide sponsorship for Australian-trained physicians. The E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap, so your application competes on credentials alone, not chance. Board eligibility, USMLE completion, and ECFMG certification are the practical gatekeepers.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as an Internal Medicine Physician
Complete ECFMG certification before applying
ECFMG certification is a hard requirement for U.S. residency and attending positions. Without it, no employer can sponsor your E-3. Start the verification process through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates before reaching out to any hiring team.
Target teaching hospitals with J-1 waiver programs
Academic medical centers and federally designated shortage area hospitals regularly sponsor international physicians. These facilities already have immigration infrastructure in place, so your E-3 sponsorship request doesn't require them to build a new process from scratch.
Request an employer-sponsored LCA before your start date
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with DOL before your visa can be processed. Confirm this step is on their timeline early, since LCA certification typically takes seven business days and cannot be backdated.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your paperwork
The E-3 application involves coordinating the LCA, DS-160, and consulate appointment simultaneously. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so the process moves in parallel with your credentialing and hospital onboarding.
Clarify your Australian medical degree equivalency upfront
Australian three-year and four-year medical degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. graduate medical education under E-3 specialty occupation rules. Confirm this with your prospective employer's legal team before the offer letter is drafted to avoid delays.
Align your state medical license timeline with your visa
State medical boards set their own licensing timelines, and some take three to six months. Apply for your state license as soon as you receive your job offer, since hospitals can't let you practice without it regardless of your visa status.

Find Internal Medicine Physician JobsInternal Medicine Physician E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Internal Medicine Physician jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to find Internal Medicine Physician roles at U.S. employers who have sponsored E-3 visas. Many hospital systems and health networks are familiar with the E-3 process for Australian physicians, particularly in academic medical centers and federally designated shortage areas where international recruitment is routine.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an Internal Medicine Physician role qualify as an E-3 specialty occupation?
Yes. Internal medicine practice requires a medical degree and postgraduate training in a specific field, which satisfies the specialty occupation definition. ECFMG certification, USMLE completion, and a valid state medical license are the practical credential requirements that confirm your qualifications meet the standard for E-3 eligibility.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Internal Medicine Physicians?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens, but it has two major advantages over the H-1B for physicians: there is no annual lottery and no numerical cap. You can apply at any time of year once you have a job offer and a certified LCA, rather than waiting for the April H-1B registration window and accepting lottery risk.
Can I change hospital employers on an E-3 visa?
You can change employers, but the new hospital must file a fresh LCA and you'll need to attend a new consulate appointment or pursue a change of status. There is no portability provision equivalent to the H-1B's AC21 rule, so coordinate the timing carefully to avoid a gap in your authorized work period.
