Verify your degree field matches the role
Data Engineer Intern postings sometimes list a degree as "preferred" rather than "required." USCIS requires specialty occupation to mandate a specific bachelor's field, so target roles where the job description explicitly requires a degree in computer science, data science, or engineering.
Target employers already filing LCAs
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data for companies with certified LCAs in data engineering or software development. Employers who've filed LCAs before understand the process and are far less likely to withdraw an offer over sponsorship logistics.
Frame your internship timeline in offer negotiations
The E-3 is issued in two-year increments, which makes intern-to-full-time conversion straightforward for employers. Raise this early: a two-year initial period covers both your internship and any transition to a full-time role without a new visa category.
Get your academic transcripts credentialed before applying
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 purposes, but have your transcripts evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before interviews so you can provide documentation immediately if an employer asks.
Use Migrate Mate to handle LCA and visa paperwork
The LCA must be certified by the DOL before your visa appointment, and intern roles sometimes involve short lead times between offer and start date. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to manage the LCA, DS-160, and consulate preparation so nothing delays your start.
Clarify E-3 obligations with your employer's HR team
Many U.S. companies have sponsored H-1B holders but have never processed an E-3. Before signing an offer, confirm HR knows the employer files the LCA (not you) and that E-Verify enrollment, while common at large employers, is not a mandatory E-3 requirement.

Find Data Engineer Intern JobsData Engineer Intern E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Data Engineer Intern jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for E-3-eligible roles. You can filter by job title and visa type to surface Data Engineer Intern positions at employers already familiar with E-3 sponsorship requirements, which cuts down time spent on applications that stall once HR discovers the sponsorship process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Data Engineer Intern role qualify as a specialty occupation under the E-3?
Yes, provided the role requires a specific bachelor's degree in a field like computer science, data science, or a related engineering discipline. USCIS looks at whether the degree requirement is tied to the actual duties, not just listed as a preference. Internships at established tech or data-focused companies generally meet this standard, but roles where any bachelor's degree is accepted may not qualify.
How does the E-3 compare to H-1B for Data Engineer Intern roles?
The E-3 has significant advantages for Australians in this context. There's no lottery, no annual cap, and the 10,500 annual allocation has never been exhausted. H-1B cap-subject petitions require a lottery selection in April before an October start date, which is incompatible with most internship timelines. The E-3 can be processed year-round with a consulate appointment, which aligns far better with internship hiring cycles.
Can my E-3 internship convert to a full-time role without changing visas?
Yes. If your employer hires you full-time into a specialty occupation role, you stay on the E-3 and your employer files a new LCA reflecting the permanent position's title and prevailing wage. The visa category doesn't change. You'll need a new E-3 stamp at your next consulate visit or, if you're already in the U.S., your status can be extended through USCIS.
