Document your Australian qualifications carefully
Your Certificate III or IV in mobile plant operations may need a formal credential evaluation to satisfy the E-3 visa specialty occupation requirement. Get a credentials assessment before approaching U.S. employers so you can present a clear degree equivalency upfront.
Target civil infrastructure and mining contractors
Large U.S. civil contractors and mining companies operating in remote regions file LCAs regularly for skilled equipment operators. Search DOL's FLAG portal to confirm which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for equipment operation roles in your target state.
Clarify specialty occupation status with your employer
Equipment Operator roles face higher USCIS scrutiny on specialty occupation grounds. Work with your employer to document that the position requires a specific degree field, not just general technical experience, before the LCA is filed with DOL.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the paperwork
Once you have a written job offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end. This reduces errors that commonly delay approvals for trade-adjacent roles where specialty occupation documentation is more detailed.
Negotiate offer letter language before signing
Your offer letter must state a specific job title, degree requirement, and start date to support the LCA. Ask your employer to confirm these details match the DOL prevailing wage classification for your role and location before you accept.
Book your consulate appointment as soon as the LCA certifies
LCA certification typically takes seven business days. Schedule your Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth consulate appointment immediately after certification, as wait times can extend several weeks and delay your U.S. start date if you leave booking until the last moment.
E-3 Visa Equipment Operator: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Equipment Operator jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Equipment Operator roles from U.S. employers who are open to E-3 visa sponsorship for Australian nationals. Because the E-3 requires a specialty occupation, filtering for employers with prior LCA filing history in construction, mining, or infrastructure significantly narrows your search to realistic sponsorship candidates.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an Equipment Operator role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It depends on how the role is defined by the employer. USCIS requires that the position normally requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. An Equipment Operator role tied to civil engineering, mining engineering, or construction management is stronger than a general operator title. Your employer's job description and the degree requirement they specify in the LCA are the deciding factors.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Equipment Operator roles?
The E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap, so there's no random selection risk. H-1B visa requires entry into a lottery that selects only about one in four registrations. For an Australian Equipment Operator, the E-3 is the more reliable path because approval isn't contingent on chance, and the process moves faster once an employer files the LCA.
Can I change employers or project sites while on an E-3 as an Equipment Operator?
Yes, but each new employer must file a fresh LCA before you start work. If your role involves regular movement between project sites under the same employer, the original LCA may cover that. Moving to a different company always requires a new LCA filing, and you should not begin work with the new employer until DOL certifies the new application.
