E-3 Visa Faculty Position Jobs
Faculty Position roles at U.S. universities qualify as E-3 visa specialty occupations when the appointment requires a graduate degree in a specific academic discipline. Australian academics can secure E-3 sponsorship without competing in a lottery, and two-year renewals mean you can build a long-term research or teaching career in the United States.

Align your credentials to specialty occupation
U.S. immigration requires your degree to match the specific discipline you'll teach or research. A PhD in biochemistry supports a biochemistry faculty role but won't hold up for a nursing or business appointment. Confirm the fit before applying.
Target universities with active LCA filing history
Not every institution has sponsored international faculty before. Search DOL's LCA disclosure data for universities that have certified Labor Condition Applications for academic titles, so you know the HR office understands the E-3 process.
Clarify tenure-track versus visiting appointment status early
E-3 petitions require a bona fide job offer. A visiting or adjunct appointment can qualify, but you'll need a formal offer letter specifying duties, salary, and start date before your sponsoring employer files the LCA with DOL.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your LCA and consulate preparation
Faculty hiring timelines are tight and often tied to semester start dates. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles your LCA certification, visa paperwork, and consulate preparation so your appointment date doesn't slip while documents are processed.
Prepare your Australian transcripts for U.S. equivalency review
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree under E-3 rules, but consular officers may ask for a credential evaluation. Having a prepared equivalency statement in your packet prevents delays at interview.
Negotiate sponsorship commitment before accepting the offer
Confirm in writing that the department will cover LCA filing costs and coordinate with the university's international office. Some departments initially push this to the candidate. Settling this before you sign protects you if HR timelines run long.
E-3 Visa Faculty Position: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Faculty Position jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search Faculty Position openings filtered specifically for E-3 visa sponsorship. Most university job boards don't label postings by visa type, so a targeted search saves you from applying to institutions that only sponsor H-1B visa or won't sponsor international candidates at all.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Faculty Position qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, faculty appointments at accredited U.S. institutions generally qualify because the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific academic discipline. The degree field must match the subject you'll teach or research. A general liberal arts degree won't support a highly specialized STEM or clinical faculty role without documented equivalency.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for faculty roles?
For Australian academics, the E-3 is a materially better path. There's no lottery, no annual cap competition, and processing is handled at the Australian consulate rather than through a lengthy USCIS petition. The trade-off is that E-3 is available only to Australian citizens, while H-1B is open to all nationalities. Cap-exempt H-1B sponsorship through a university is also possible, but the E-3 is faster and less administratively intensive for eligible candidates.
Can I switch institutions on an E-3 visa mid-appointment?
Yes, but you need a new LCA certified by DOL and a new E-3 visa stamp or change of status before starting work at the new institution. Your existing E-3 is tied to the original employer. If you're moving between universities, start the new LCA process as soon as the offer is firm to avoid a gap in authorized employment.
