Align your degree to specialty occupation criteria
FAE roles often require electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field. If your Australian degree is in mechatronics or applied physics, document how your coursework maps to the job's technical requirements before approaching employers.
Target companies with active LCA filing histories
Search DOL's Labor Condition Application disclosure data for employers who have previously filed LCAs for Field Application Engineer or Applications Engineer roles. This confirms they understand E-3 visa sponsorship and have done it before.
Address the E-3 process before your offer call
Many hiring managers conflate E-3 with H-1B visa and assume a lottery is involved. Clarify upfront that E-3 has no lottery, no cap, and that the LCA filing with DOL is the only employer-side requirement before your consulate appointment.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your application
Once you have an offer, Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the LCA submission, DS-160, and consulate preparation end-to-end, so your employer doesn't need an immigration attorney to get started.
Get your ECSA credentials assessed before interviewing
U.S. employers hiring for FAE roles in regulated industries may ask for credential equivalency. A formal skills assessment from Engineers Australia or a NAATI-recognised body confirms your Australian qualification meets U.S. bachelor's degree equivalency.
Find E-3-ready Field Application Engineer roles on Migrate Mate
Search for Field Application Engineer positions on Migrate Mate, which filters roles by E-3 sponsorship availability so you're not spending time on employers unfamiliar with Australian visa requirements.
E-3 Visa Field Application Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Field Application Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals seeking U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. Searching there filters out employers unfamiliar with the visa and surfaces FAE positions where the hiring team is already prepared to support the LCA filing and consulate process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Field Application Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, in most cases. FAE positions typically require a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related technical field, which satisfies the E-3 specialty occupation definition. The key is that the job description must specify a degree requirement in a particular discipline, not just any bachelor's degree.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Field Application Engineers?
The E-3 is available year-round with no lottery and no annual cap, while H-1B registration closes in March with roughly a one-in-four selection chance. For FAEs with Australian citizenship, the E-3 is almost always the faster and more predictable path, with a typical timeline from offer letter to consulate appointment of four to eight weeks.
Can I change FAE employers on an E-3 without losing status?
You can change employers, but you need a new LCA and a new visa stamp before starting work with the new company. Unlike H-1B portability, E-3 doesn't allow you to begin work at the new employer while the petition is pending. Plan for a consulate appointment in Australia or at a third-country post if your current stamp has expired.
