Document your engineering leadership credentials thoroughly
U.S. consular officers assess whether your degree field aligns with the Head of Engineering role. Gather transcripts, your Australian bachelor's or higher degree certificate, and any professional engineering registrations before you start applying.
Target employers with existing LCA filing history
Companies that have certified Labor Condition Applications with the DOL for senior engineering roles already understand the E-3 process. Prioritise organisations in tech, infrastructure, and manufacturing where engineering leadership headcount is large enough to normalise sponsorship.
Clarify the specialty occupation requirement early in interviews
Some hiring managers assume any bachelor's degree satisfies the E-3's specialty occupation test. Confirm with HR that the Head of Engineering role requires a degree specifically in engineering, computer science, or a related technical field, not just any degree.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA and visa paperwork
Once you have a signed offer, Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the DOL Labor Condition Application certification and prepares your complete consulate packet, reducing the administrative burden on both you and your new employer.
Negotiate an employment start date that accounts for LCA processing
The DOL typically certifies an LCA within seven business days, but consulate appointment availability in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth can add two to six weeks. Build that window into your offer negotiation so your start date is realistic.
Prepare for consulate questions about your direct reports and scope
E-3 interviews for senior leadership roles often probe whether the position genuinely requires a specialised degree. Bring an org chart, a role-specific job description, and evidence linking your engineering qualifications to the technical responsibilities you will oversee.
E-3 Visa Head Of Engineering: Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find Head of Engineering jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals seeking U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. It surfaces Head of Engineering positions at employers already familiar with the visa process, so you spend less time educating hiring teams about the LCA requirement and more time progressing through interviews.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Head of Engineering role qualify as a specialty occupation under the E-3?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a directly related technical field. Roles where the degree requirement is broad or optional may not meet the specialty occupation standard, so review the job description carefully and confirm with the employer before proceeding.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Head of Engineering candidates?
The E-3 has a 10,500-slot annual allocation that has never been fully used, so there is no lottery. H-1B visa registrants for the same role enter a random selection process that currently selects roughly one in four applicants. The E-3 also allows indefinite two-year renewals with the same or a new employer, making it a more predictable path for long-term engineering leadership careers in the U.S.
Can I change employers as a Head of Engineering on an E-3 visa?
You can change employers, but the new company must file a fresh Labor Condition Application with the DOL and you will need to attend a new consulate appointment before starting work with them. There is no portability provision equivalent to H-1B's AC21 rule, so plan the transition timeline carefully and avoid resigning before your new LCA is certified.
