Align your degree to the role
Consular officers assess whether your qualification directly supports the Installer position. An engineering, construction management, or building technology degree strengthens your case far more than a general science credential when the job involves complex system installation.
Target employers with active LCA histories
Employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications before understand the DOL certification step. Search the OFLC disclosure database for companies that have sponsored similar technical or construction roles, then prioritise outreach to those hiring managers.
Request specialty occupation language in your offer letter
Your job offer must describe the role as requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Ask your employer to frame the Installer position around systems design, technical project management, or engineered installations, not general labour or trade work.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your LCA and visa paperwork
The LCA must be DOL-certified before you can apply at the consulate, and errors in the prevailing wage section are a common delay point. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from offer acceptance through to your consulate appointment.
Prepare for consulate questions on nonimmigrant intent
Installer roles often involve long-term projects, which can prompt questions about your plans to return to Australia. Bring documentation showing your two-year visa period aligns with a defined project scope or contract term rather than an open-ended arrangement.
Clarify E-Verify requirements before your start date
Some U.S. federal contractors and state-regulated construction employers are required to use E-Verify. Confirm with your employer whether E-Verify applies to your worksite so your I-9 documentation is ready on day one without delaying your start.
E-3 Visa Installer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Installer jobs in the U.S. that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended way to search for Installer roles with confirmed E-3 sponsorship. Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, which means you spend time applying to roles where the employer has no experience with E-3 requirements. Migrate Mate surfaces positions from employers already familiar with Australian visa sponsorship, reducing the back-and-forth with HR teams who are starting from scratch.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an Installer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
It depends on how the role is defined. A general installation or trades position typically does not qualify because it doesn't require a bachelor's degree in a specific field. However, an Installer role framed around systems engineering, technical project delivery, or complex infrastructure installation, where a degree in engineering or construction management is genuinely required, can meet the specialty occupation standard. The job offer language is critical.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Australian professionals in Installer roles?
The E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap backlog, so you can apply at any time of year once you have a qualifying job offer. H-1B visa requires registration in March and selection by lottery, with a roughly 25 percent selection rate for general registrations. For Installer roles specifically, the E-3 also allows consular processing in Australia, which means you can have your visa before you relocate rather than changing status inside the U.S.
Can my E-3 visa be renewed if I stay in the same Installer role long-term?
Yes. The E-3 renews in two-year increments with no limit on the number of renewals, provided you maintain a qualifying job offer and your employer files a new LCA with the DOL each cycle. For long-term installation projects or ongoing employment, this makes the E-3 a stable option. Your employer will need to certify prevailing wage compliance at each renewal, so keep your role description consistent with the specialty occupation framing used in your initial application.
