Align your credentials to specialty occupation
Maintenance roles only qualify for E-3 visa if the position requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Document how your Australian engineering or facilities management degree maps directly to the job duties, not just the industry.
Target employers with facilities engineering teams
Large manufacturers, hospitals, universities, and commercial real estate firms regularly sponsor maintenance professionals because their roles carry engineering or systems complexity. Search for postings that list a degree requirement, not just trade experience.
Confirm the job description specifies degree requirements
The DOL LCA certification requires the employer to attest the role is a specialty occupation. If the job posting says 'degree preferred' rather than 'required,' push your employer to revise the description before filing or risk a USCIS challenge.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for LCA paperwork
The LCA must be certified by DOL before your consulate appointment. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so nothing delays your start date with the employer.
Clarify your three-year degree equivalency upfront
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 purposes, but your employer's immigration contact may not know this. Raise it early so it doesn't become a late-stage objection.
Negotiate who handles filing before signing the offer
Unlike H-1B visa, E-3 applications are filed directly at the consulate, so employers sometimes assume no action is needed on their end. Confirm your employer will complete the LCA and provide a support letter before you accept.
E-3 Visa Maintenance: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Maintenance jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for E-3 visa sponsorship roles in the U.S. You can filter by job title and see employers with active E-3 and LCA filing history. Standard job boards don't surface sponsorship willingness, so you'd otherwise need to research each employer's DOL disclosure data manually.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Do Maintenance roles qualify as specialty occupations for E-3?
Not automatically. General maintenance or trade technician roles typically don't qualify because they don't require a specific bachelor's degree. However, positions like facilities engineer, building systems engineer, or maintenance manager with a required degree in mechanical engineering or a related field can meet the specialty occupation standard. The job description must make the degree requirement explicit.
How does E-3 compare to H-1B for Maintenance professionals?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens and has no lottery, no annual cap, and no wait for a registration window. H-1B has an 85,000-slot annual cap with a lottery where selection isn't guaranteed. For a qualified Australian maintenance professional with a degree-requiring role, E-3 is a far more direct and predictable path than entering the H-1B lottery.
Can my employer use trade experience instead of a degree to support my E-3?
In limited circumstances, yes. USCIS allows three years of specialized work experience to substitute for one year of formal education, so 12 years of relevant experience can satisfy a four-year degree requirement. However, this substitution still requires a formal credential evaluation, and consular officers apply it inconsistently for maintenance roles, so a degree match is always stronger.
