Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Mechanical Engineer
Translate your Australian credentials for U.S. employers
A three-year Australian engineering degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor's for E-3 visa purposes. Have your transcripts ready to show the degree aligns with the mechanical engineering field the role requires.
Target employers with active DOL filing history
Search DOL's Foreign Labor Application Gateway for employers who have previously filed Labor Condition Applications for engineering roles. Prior LCA filings signal that HR and legal teams already understand the E-3 sponsorship process.
Confirm the job posting requires a specific engineering degree
A mechanical engineer role only qualifies as a specialty occupation if the employer genuinely requires a relevant bachelor's degree. Job listings that accept 'any bachelor's degree' can create problems at the consulate interview, so verify the requirement before applying.
Get your LCA and visa paperwork filed correctly
The LCA must be certified by DOL before you can attend your consulate appointment. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so nothing stalls between your offer letter and your visa stamp.
Negotiate a start date that fits E-3 processing timelines
Consulate appointment availability in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth varies by season. Build at least four to six weeks between your signed offer and your proposed start date so your employer isn't left waiting if appointment slots are delayed.
Understand how professional engineer registration affects your application
If the role references Chartered or Professional Engineer status as a requirement, bring documentation from Engineers Australia showing your credentials. Consular officers may ask how your qualifications map to the specific U.S. job duties listed on the LCA.
E-3 Visa Mechanical Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Mechanical Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search mechanical engineer roles filtered by E-3 sponsorship. Many employers don't advertise E-3 sponsorship explicitly because the process is simpler than H-1B visa, so filtering by companies with LCA filing history is a more reliable method than searching by visa type alone.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a mechanical engineer role qualify as an E-3 specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering or a directly related field. Roles involving design, analysis, or testing of mechanical systems typically satisfy this requirement. Generalist engineering manager positions that accept any technical degree may face more scrutiny at the consulate.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for mechanical engineers in the United States?
The E-3 has no annual lottery and no cap, so you can apply any time of year and start as soon as your visa is approved. H-1B selection is random with roughly a one-in-four chance each year. For Australian mechanical engineers, the E-3 is almost always faster and more predictable than waiting on an H-1B lottery result.
Can I switch mechanical engineering employers while on an E-3 visa?
Yes. Each new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new visa stamp reflecting that employer. You can begin working for the new employer once your new E-3 visa is approved. There is no portability provision like H-1B has, so timing the transition carefully around your consulate appointment matters.
