Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Mental Health Counseling
Verify your credentials meet state licensure requirements
U.S. states license mental health counselors independently, and many require a master's degree plus supervised hours. Confirm your Australian qualifications translate before applying, since licensure eligibility directly affects whether an employer can sponsor you.
Target employers who already file LCAs
Search the DOL's Foreign Labor Application Gateway for certified LCAs under mental health counselor SOC codes. Employers with recent certifications have already navigated the prevailing wage process and are far more likely to sponsor again.
Address your Australian degree equivalency upfront
Australian three-year psychology or counseling degrees often raise questions about U.S. equivalency. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization before your interview so employers aren't surprised during the LCA or visa filing stage.
Negotiate who handles the LCA and filing paperwork
Many private practices want to sponsor but don't know where to start. Bring the process to them: use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork, reducing the burden on employers unfamiliar with E-3 requirements.
Distinguish E-3 from H-1B when approaching smaller clinics
Community mental health centers and private practices often assume visa sponsorship means H-1B lottery risk. Clarify that the E-3 has no cap, no lottery, and no employer PERM obligation, which removes the biggest barriers smaller employers cite.
Align your offer letter with specialty occupation standards
Your offer letter must describe duties requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Generic language like 'provide therapy services' can trigger DOL scrutiny. Ask your employer to specify clinical assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment modalities.

Find Mental Health Counseling JobsMental Health Counseling E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find mental health counseling jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search for mental health counseling roles posted by U.S. employers open to E-3 sponsorship. Filtering by visa type saves significant time compared to manually vetting listings. Most roles are in outpatient clinics, community health centers, telehealth platforms, and hospital systems, which tend to have HR teams experienced with work visa sponsorship.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a mental health counseling role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a directly related field. USCIS looks at both the job duties and the employer's normal hiring standards. Roles at accredited clinical settings that mandate licensure-track credentials almost always meet the specialty occupation threshold.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for mental health counselors?
The E-3 has significant advantages: there's no annual lottery, no cap to exhaust, and the process typically moves faster since there's no registration phase. H-1B selection odds are roughly one in four in recent years. For Australian counselors, the E-3 is the faster and more predictable path to authorized employment, with no competitive filing window to navigate.
Can I transfer my E-3 to a new mental health employer mid-status?
Yes. The E-3 is employer-specific, so your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new visa stamp if you travel internationally. Domestically, you can begin work once the new LCA is certified and your employer has the required documentation in place, without waiting for USCIS approval of a new petition.
