Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as an Orthopaedic Surgeon
Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
U.S. employers require ECFMG certification and a valid state medical license before they can support an E-3 application. Confirm your credentials are current and that your Australian medical degree maps to the specialty occupation definition DOL uses for physicians.
Target academic medical centers and hospital systems
Large academic medical centers and regional hospital systems file LCAs regularly and have in-house HR teams familiar with E-3 sponsorship. Surgical groups at private practices often don't, so qualifying them upfront saves weeks of back-and-forth.
Use Migrate Mate to handle your LCA filing
The LCA must be certified by DOL before your consulate appointment can proceed. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to manage the LCA submission, prevailing wage compliance, and DS-160 preparation so nothing stalls between offer and visa stamp.
Confirm the role meets specialty occupation criteria
Orthopaedic surgeon positions typically qualify, but make sure your job offer letter specifies the subspecialty and degree requirements explicitly. Roles titled 'physician' without specialty detail can trigger DOL scrutiny during LCA review.
Request a two-year initial E-3 period in your offer
Negotiate your employment contract to align with the standard two-year E-3 validity period so renewal timelines match contract renewal dates. USCIS allows unlimited renewals, so structuring this correctly from the start avoids gaps in authorised work status.

Find Orthopaedic Surgeon JobsOrthopaedic Surgeon E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find orthopaedic surgeon jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. You can filter by specialty and see which employers have a history of filing LCAs for medical roles. Most general job boards don't surface visa sponsorship status, so you end up cold-qualifying employers yourself, which is slow and unreliable.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an orthopaedic surgeon role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes. Orthopaedic surgery requires a medical degree, residency, and fellowship training, which satisfies the DOL and USCIS specialty occupation standard. Your employer must document this in the LCA and job offer letter, specifying that a minimum of a medical degree in the relevant specialty is required for the position.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian orthopaedic surgeons?
The E-3 has a 10,500 annual allocation that is rarely filled, so there's no lottery and no cap pressure. H-1B requires registration in a lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate. For an Australian orthopaedic surgeon with a qualifying job offer, the E-3 is a direct path to a visa stamp without the uncertainty of lottery selection.
Can I switch orthopaedic surgery employers while on an E-3?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and obtain certification before you start work. Unlike H-1B portability rules, there's no grace period that lets you begin with a new employer while the paperwork is pending. Structure your transition so the new LCA is certified and your DS-160 is updated before your start date.
