Verify your credentials meet U.S. licensure
Australian medical degrees are generally accepted, but U.S. states require USMLE passage and an ECFMG certificate before granting licensure. Confirm your state's medical board requirements before accepting any offer, since the E-3 visa petition depends on documented eligibility to practice.
Target federally qualified health centers first
Federally Qualified Health Centers and rural health clinics face chronic physician shortages and file E-3 LCAs regularly. These employers are experienced with foreign-trained physicians and often move faster from offer to DOL-certified LCA than large hospital systems.
Search E-3 sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Primary Care Physician roles by employers with active E-3 sponsorship history. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service also manages your LCA submission, DS-160, and consulate preparation end-to-end once you have an offer.
Clarify J-1 waiver status before negotiating
If you completed a U.S. residency or fellowship on a J-1 visa, you may carry a two-year home residency requirement that blocks E-3 status until a waiver is granted. Raise this with your employer early so the J-1 waiver timeline doesn't delay your start date.
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your role
DOL prevailing wage levels for Primary Care Physicians vary by county and practice setting. Your employer must certify an LCA at or above the applicable wage before you can apply. Ask the hiring manager to confirm the wage level before signing, not after.
Request employer-paid premium processing at offer stage
If you're applying from outside the U.S., the E-3 is issued at the consulate without USCIS adjudication. If you're changing status domestically, negotiate USCIS premium processing into your offer letter so your start date isn't held up by standard processing queues.
E-3 Visa Primary Care Physician: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Primary Care Physician jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for E-3 sponsoring employers. You can filter Primary Care Physician roles by employers who have filed E-3 or LCA documentation for this occupation, so you're not cold-applying to practices that have never sponsored a visa. Searching this way cuts the screening time significantly compared to general job boards.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Primary Care Physician role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes. Primary Care Physician is a specialty occupation because the position requires a medical degree as a standard minimum entry requirement. You'll need to show your Australian medical degree, your ECFMG certificate if applicable, and evidence of state licensure eligibility. The role's DOL Standard Occupational Classification code (29-1215) supports the specialty occupation classification.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Primary Care Physicians?
The E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and has no annual lottery, unlike the H-1B visa which is capped at 85,000 per year with a randomized selection process. For Primary Care Physicians, this means you can accept an offer and begin the visa process without waiting for a lottery result. E-3 status is granted in two-year increments and is renewable indefinitely, making long-term U.S. practice planning straightforward.
Can I work for multiple practices on a single E-3 visa?
Not automatically. Each E-3 is tied to a specific employer and the LCA filed for that position. If you want to work across two practices, each employer must file a separate LCA and you'll need separate E-3 approval for each. Locum tenens arrangements through a staffing agency are one way to consolidate the sponsorship under a single employer entity.
