Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Principal Engineer
Align your credentials to specialty occupation
Your Australian engineering degree must map directly to the Principal Engineer role, not engineering broadly. A three-year bachelor's is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree, but have your transcripts ready to demonstrate the field alignment.
Target employers with active LCA filing histories
Search the DOL's OFLC disclosure data for companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for senior engineering roles. Employers already familiar with LCA requirements move faster and make fewer errors during your sponsorship process.
Clarify the job description before the LCA is filed
The LCA locks in your job title and wage level. If your responsibilities span architecture, people management, and hands-on development, work with your employer to define the role accurately before filing, an imprecise description can create problems at the consulate.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the paperwork
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end. This avoids the common errors that delay consulate appointments, and gets your application moving within one business day of engagement.
Prepare for nonimmigrant intent questions at the consulate
Consular officers will ask about your ties to Australia and your long-term intentions. As a Principal Engineer, you're likely to be asked about equity, leadership track, and whether you intend to remain permanently, prepare specific, honest answers that frame your U.S. move as career-driven, not permanent resettlement.
Negotiate your start date around LCA certification timing
The DOL typically certifies LCAs within seven business days, but your employer still needs to post the LCA notice at the worksite for ten consecutive business days before filing. Build this into your offer negotiation so your start date is realistic and avoids a rushed consulate booking.
E-3 Visa Principal Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Principal Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, it surfaces Principal Engineer roles at employers with active E-3 and LCA filing histories, so you're not cold-applying to companies that have never sponsored an Australian before. Filtering by visa type and role seniority saves significant time compared to manually cross-referencing DOL disclosure data.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Principal Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, in most cases. Principal Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field, which meets the specialty occupation definition. The key is that the degree requirement must be specific to the field, not a general requirement that any bachelor's degree would satisfy. If your job description is broad, work with your employer to tighten the role definition before the LCA is filed.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for a Principal Engineer?
The E-3 is a materially better path for Australian nationals at this level. There's no lottery, no annual cap, and no registration fee, you can apply any time of year after receiving a job offer. The H-1B visa requires surviving a randomized lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate. For a Principal Engineer with an offer in hand, the E-3 means starting your role on a predictable timeline rather than waiting on lottery results.
Can I switch employers or get promoted while on an E-3 as a Principal Engineer?
Yes to both, but each requires action. Changing employers means your new employer must file a fresh LCA and you'll need a new E-3 visa or amended status before starting the new role. A promotion that changes your job title, responsibilities, or wage level materially enough may also require an amended LCA. Don't assume your existing visa automatically covers a new role, confirm the scope of the change with your employer before accepting.
