Translate your credentials for U.S. employers
Australian engineering degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year bachelor's degrees for E-3 visa purposes. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency before you apply so employers aren't left guessing about your qualifications.
Target industries with established LCA filing history
Oil and gas, chemical processing, and utilities companies file Labor Condition Applications regularly for process control roles. Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data by SOC code 17-2199 to identify employers who have certified LCAs for similar engineering positions.
Flag E-3 eligibility early in conversations
Many U.S. hiring managers assume Australian engineers need H-1B visa sponsorship and rule them out. Clarify upfront that the E-3 has no lottery, no employer quota, and a straightforward DOL filing process so sponsors aren't discouraged before reviewing your application.
Understand the LCA prevailing wage requirement
Your offer letter must meet DOL prevailing wage levels for the specific SOC code and work location before the LCA can be certified. Ask the hiring team to confirm the wage level during offer negotiation, not after you've accepted.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the paperwork
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end. This avoids the delays that happen when employers attempt the DOL certification process without prior experience filing for engineering roles.
Prepare your technical documentation before the consulate interview
Consular officers verify that your role genuinely qualifies as a specialty occupation. Bring your degree transcripts, a detailed offer letter describing your process control responsibilities, and any professional registration documents such as your Engineers Australia membership or CPEng certification.
E-3 Visa Process Control Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Process Control Engineer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. You can filter by job title and see which employers have a history of supporting E-3 applications for engineering roles. This saves you from applying to companies that aren't set up to sponsor, which is a common and costly time drain for engineers in this field.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Process Control Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for E-3 purposes?
Yes. Process Control Engineer positions typically qualify because they require at minimum a bachelor's degree in chemical, electrical, or instrumentation engineering for entry into the role. The key test is whether the degree requirement is specific to the field, not just any degree. A job description that says 'bachelor's preferred' rather than 'required' can create problems at the consulate, so review the offer letter wording carefully before filing.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Process Control Engineers?
The E-3 has no annual lottery, which means you can apply at any point in the year and start work as soon as your visa is issued. H-1B petitions are capped at 85,000 per year and selected by lottery in April, with a start date no earlier than October 1. For process control roles where project timelines are fixed, the E-3's flexibility is a practical advantage over waiting on lottery results.
Can I change employers while on an E-3 as a Process Control Engineer?
You can change employers, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp before you start work. Unlike some other visa categories, the E-3 does not have a portability provision that lets you begin work while the new application is pending. Plan the timing carefully and avoid gaps between your last day with the old employer and your new visa being issued.
