Credential your Australian engineering degree correctly
A three-year Australian engineering degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor's for E-3 visa purposes, but carry your official transcripts and a credential evaluation letter to remove any doubt during the consulate interview.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data to find engineering and construction firms that have filed Labor Condition Applications for Project Engineer roles. Prior LCA filings signal a company already understands the E-3 sponsorship process.
Verify your job description meets specialty occupation criteria
Your offer letter must describe duties that specifically require an engineering degree, not just prefer one. A vague job description listing a degree as preferred rather than required can be enough for USCIS to question specialty occupation status at renewal.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your LCA and paperwork
The LCA must be certified by DOL before your consulate appointment, and the timing matters. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so nothing slips between offer acceptance and your interview date.
Negotiate the employer's role in sponsorship early
E-3 sponsorship costs are typically split between employer and applicant, but the LCA filing is legally the employer's obligation. Clarify before signing your offer who handles the DOL filing, the attorney or service fees, and the timeline from offer to start date.
Prepare your consulate documents around project-based work history
If your engineering career spans contract or project-based roles rather than single long-term employers, bring a clear employment history showing continuous specialty occupation work. Consular officers reviewing E-3 applications look for an unbroken thread of degree-level engineering experience.
E-3 Visa Project Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Project Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. Rather than filtering through generic job boards that rarely surface visa status, Migrate Mate focuses on employers who understand the E-3 process and are open to sponsoring Australian engineers, which shortens the search considerably.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Project Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Project Engineer positions qualify when the role requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a closely related field as a genuine condition of employment. If the posting lists a degree as preferred rather than required, or accepts any bachelor's degree regardless of discipline, the specialty occupation standard becomes harder to satisfy at the consulate or at renewal.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Project Engineers?
The H-1B visa subjects you to an annual lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection chance, meaning you may wait years for a slot even with a firm job offer. The E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap that realistically fills, so an Australian Project Engineer with a qualifying offer can proceed directly to a consulate appointment. The trade-off is that E-3 eligibility is limited to Australian citizens.
Can I change employers or projects while on an E-3 as a Project Engineer?
You can change employers on E-3 status, but the new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you must obtain a new E-3 visa stamp before starting work, or in some cases pursue a change of status if you are already inside the United States. Moving between projects within the same employer does not require a new filing, provided your job title and duties remain consistent with the original LCA.
