Verify your Australian degree meets requirements
U.S. consular officers assess whether your Australian qualification maps to the role's specialty occupation. A three-year bachelor's degree in rehabilitation science or occupational therapy is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree, but have your transcripts ready to confirm the field matches.
Check state licensure before accepting offers
Most rehabilitation roles require state-specific licensure before you can legally practice. Confirm which state license your employer expects you to hold, and clarify whether they'll support the application process, since unlicensed status can delay your start date even after your E-3 visa is approved.
Target employers familiar with E-3 LCA filing
Many rehabilitation employers, including hospital networks and outpatient therapy groups, have sponsored E-3 visas before. Ask HR teams directly whether they've filed a Labor Condition Application through DOL, since inexperienced employers sometimes assume E-3 sponsorship is as complex as H-1B visa when it isn't.
Search for E-3 sponsorship jobs on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters rehabilitation roles by E-3 visa sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to employers who haven't sponsored before. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you have an offer confirmed.
Clarify employment type during offer negotiations
Contract staffing agencies and per-diem rehabilitation roles can create complications for E-3 petitions because the visa requires a bona fide employer-employee relationship. If the offer comes through a third-party staffing firm, confirm which entity will sign as your petitioning employer on the LCA.
Time your consulate appointment around your start date
Your LCA must be certified by DOL before your consulate interview, typically within seven business days of filing. Build at least three weeks between your offer acceptance and your target start date to allow for LCA certification and appointment scheduling at Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth.
E-3 Visa Rehabilitation Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Rehabilitation Specialist jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search, since it surfaces rehabilitation roles from employers with documented E-3 sponsorship experience. Standard job searches won't filter by visa type, which means you'll spend time applying to employers who either don't sponsor or aren't familiar with the E-3 process. Filtering by sponsorship history upfront saves significant effort.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Rehabilitation Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, rehabilitation specialist positions typically qualify when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as rehabilitation counseling, occupational therapy, or physical therapy. The key test is whether the position normally requires a degree in a defined specialty, not just any bachelor's degree. Roles in clinical settings with licensed-practice requirements are the strongest fits.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Rehabilitation Specialist roles?
The E-3 is available only to Australian nationals and has no lottery, no annual cap pressure, and a faster path to an approved petition. H-1B requires a lottery selection and often takes months longer. For rehabilitation roles, where many employers are regional health systems unfamiliar with complex visa processes, the simpler E-3 process is a real practical advantage when negotiating sponsorship.
Can I switch employers after getting my E-3 visa as a Rehabilitation Specialist?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need to obtain a new E-3 visa stamp before re-entering the U.S., or file a change of status if you're already inside the country. There's no portability provision like H-1B has under AC21, so plan the transition timeline carefully to avoid gaps in lawful status.
