Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Research Intern
Align your degree to the research field
E-3 eligibility requires your degree to match the specific discipline of the internship. A chemistry degree supports a biochemistry research role, but a general business degree won't satisfy DOL's specialty occupation standard for bench-science positions.
Request an official transcript evaluation early
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees, but your employer's immigration team may request a formal credential evaluation before filing the Labor Condition Application with DOL.
Target institutions with active research funding
Universities, federal contractors, and NIH-funded research centers regularly sponsor E-3 interns because their HR teams already manage LCA filings. Government-funded labs at agencies like the NSF or USDA tend to have established sponsorship processes.
Search for E-3 sponsorship using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Research Intern roles by E-3 sponsorship history. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service also handles your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end once you have an offer confirmed.
Clarify the LCA filing timeline with your employer
The employer must file and receive a certified LCA from DOL before you can apply at the consulate. Certification typically takes seven business days, so confirm your employer has started this step before you book your visa appointment.
Address your nonimmigrant intent at the consulate
Research internships can raise consular scrutiny because the role may imply academic or immigrant pathways. Bring documentation of your intended return to Australia, such as university enrollment confirmation or a letter stating the fixed internship end date.

Find Research Intern JobsResearch Intern E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Research Intern jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search Research Intern positions filtered specifically for E-3 sponsorship. Many research roles are posted without explicitly advertising visa support, so targeting employers with a history of LCA filings, which Migrate Mate surfaces, is more reliable than filtering by job description keywords alone.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Research Intern role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It qualifies when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as biology, chemistry, data science, or social research. Internships described as requiring any degree regardless of field, or no degree at all, won't meet DOL's specialty occupation standard and will not support an E-3 application.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Research Intern roles?
The E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap, so you can secure sponsorship at any time of year without waiting for an April selection round. H-1B cap-subject petitions require a lottery slot before the employer can file, which often makes short-term research internships impractical under H-1B. The E-3 is also renewable indefinitely, giving you more flexibility if the internship extends.
Can I start a Research Intern role while my E-3 is being processed?
No. You must attend a consulate interview in Australia and receive the E-3 visa stamp before you can begin work in the U.S. The employer can submit the LCA to DOL and prepare paperwork in advance, but you cannot work under E-3 status until the visa is physically issued and you've entered the U.S. in E-3 status.
