Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a School Librarian
Get your ALIA credentials U.S.-ready
U.S. school districts evaluate Australian library qualifications against state teacher-librarian certification requirements, not just federal specialty occupation standards. Request a formal credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before applying so employers can confirm your degree meets their state's licensing threshold.
Target districts with existing H-1B or E-3 history
Search the DOL's Labor Condition Application disclosure data to identify school districts that have previously filed LCAs for librarian or specialist roles. Prior filings mean HR already understands the sponsorship process, which shortens your negotiation.
Search for E-3 sponsorship roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate surfaces school librarian positions where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship, filtering out roles that list only local candidates. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you have an offer.
Address state teacher-librarian licensure in your cover letter
Many U.S. states require school librarians to hold a teaching certificate alongside library credentials. Proactively explain how your Australian qualifications map to the state's requirements, districts won't sponsor until they're confident you can legally hold the role.
Confirm your employer files the LCA before accepting
The E-3 process requires the employer to obtain a certified Labor Condition Application from the DOL before your consulate appointment. Verify this step is in your offer letter timeline, some smaller districts assume you handle it, which is incorrect under E-3 rules.
Time your consulate appointment around the school calendar
School librarian roles typically start in August or January. Work backward from your intended start date, allowing at least six to eight weeks for LCA certification and consulate scheduling at Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth to avoid missing the hiring window.

Find School Librarian JobsSchool Librarian E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find school librarian jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for school librarian roles where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, so you waste time on roles that won't consider international candidates. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for E-3-eligible positions and connects you with employers who already understand the process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a school librarian role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in library science, information studies, or a closely related field. Roles that only prefer a degree but accept unrelated backgrounds may not qualify. Districts that mandate a state-issued teacher-librarian credential tied to a specific degree field typically satisfy the specialty occupation standard more cleanly.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Australian school librarians?
The E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and has no lottery, so you can apply at any time of year without being excluded by chance. The H-1B requires winning a randomised selection process with a roughly 25% success rate. For school librarians starting in August, the E-3's predictable timeline is far more compatible with the academic hiring calendar than waiting on H-1B lottery results in March.
Can I switch school districts while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but each new employer must file a fresh LCA with the DOL and you'll typically need a new E-3 visa stamp before starting work with the new district. You can begin working for the new employer once the LCA is certified and you hold a valid E-3 issued for that employer, so plan the transition with your new district's HR team well in advance of your intended start date.
